Niger’s President Tiani Praises Algeria’s Support for Niger’s Sovereignty

ALGIERS – February 16, 2026 – Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani expressed deep gratitude on Monday to Algeria for its solidarity with the Nigerien people and for its principled stance in support of the sovereignty of Niger and its internal political choices.
Speaking during a joint statement alongside President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Presidency headquarters, President Tiani praised Algeria’s highest authorities, noting that despite what he described as futile attempts by certain neo-colonial powers and international and sub-regional organizations, Algeria remained steadfast in its support of Niger following the events of July 26, 2023.
Commitment to Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
President Tiani stressed that Algeria’s position in favor of respecting Niger’s sovereignty and internal political decisions “honors Algeria, its government and its people.” He added that no Algerian or African could imagine Algeria allowing its territory to be used to attack a fellow African country, recalling the suffering endured by Algeria during more than a century of colonial rule.
On another level, the Nigerien leader said his visit to Algeria reflected Niger’s commitment to strengthening fraternity and bilateral cooperation between the two peoples and governments, praising the excellence of historical relations and the shared determination to further energize neighborly and fraternal ties.
“This visit comes within the framework of continuously strengthening our strategic partnership, particularly in the sectors of security, oil and energy, infrastructure and transport, communications, trade, education and training,” President Tiani said.
He also expressed the Nigerien government’s hope that both sides would accelerate the effective launch and completion of joint projects, including the Kafra block project, the dry port of Agadez, the railway linking the two countries and the Trans-Saharan corridor.
Expanding Development Projects
President Tiani further mentioned additional projects aimed at reinforcing cooperation between the two nations, including the construction of a dialysis center in Tchirozérine, the renovation and expansion of the Algerian-Nigerien Friendship Vocational High School in Zinder, the establishment of an Islamic training institute and a polyclinic in Agadez, and the construction of a national pedagogical and technical resources center in Niamey.
He expressed confidence that Algeria and Niger would overcome all difficulties and obstacles to achieve meaningful results through dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing the spirit of friendship and brotherhood guiding his visit.
President Tiani concluded by extending warm thanks to President Tebboune, the Algerian government and the Algerian people for the warm and fraternal welcome extended to him and the delegation accompanying him.
