Algiers – September 2025 – On the eve of the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), hosted for the first time in Algeria, the National Organization of Algerian Journalists (NOAJ) has issued a call to action, urging the national media to rise as a united defensive front against the escalating tide of disinformation and malicious campaigns aimed at undermining Algeria’s stature.
In its communiqué dated September 3, 2025, the organization described the IATF not as a mere economic gathering, but as a strategic milestone that reaffirms Algeria’s natural role as a bridge for African integration and a pillar of continental stability. By convening over 2,000 exhibitors, delegations from 140 nations, and a projected 35,000 professional visitors, the fair underscores Algeria’s pivotal position as a driving force of inter-African cooperation.
Yet, alongside this momentum, the NOAJ sounded the alarm over a disturbing parallel trend: a wave of fabricated news, rumors, and deliberate distortions circulating across digital platforms, deliberately designed to tarnish Algeria’s image and corrode public trust in its institutions.
Media as the First Line of Defense
The statement frames the media not as passive observers, but as active guardians of national credibility. “Algeria today needs its media more than ever,” the communiqué stresses, calling on newspapers, broadcasters, and digital platforms — public and private alike — to embrace their historic responsibility.
The NOAJ outlined a multi-layered strategy: ensuring wide and continuous coverage of the fair’s sessions and achievements, responding swiftly and professionally to disinformation campaigns, promoting a transparent and credible discourse, and producing high-quality content that projects the vitality of the Algerian economy and its continental outreach.
Such efforts, the organization insists, are not ancillary but integral to national security and cohesion. Disinformation, if left unchecked, risks not only the success of a single economic event but the erosion of the very trust that binds citizens to their state.
The communiqué situates the IATF within a broader geopolitical context. As Algeria seeks to cement its leadership in Africa and present itself as a trusted hub for trade and cooperation, its media must act as the shield and voice of the nation.
“The challenge transcends economics,” the NOAJ asserts. “It is a national test of vigilance, professionalism, and collective commitment to the higher interest of the nation.”
