Algiers, Algeria | In a wide-ranging and candid dialogue with a delegation of prominent Lebanese journalists, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s principled and sovereign stance on several pivotal regional and international issues, notably the Palestinian cause, the situation in Lebanon and Syria, and the current state of Algerian-French relations. The meeting, held at the El Mouradia Palace during the official visit of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, reflects Algeria’s ongoing commitment to dialogue, stability, and regional solidarity.

No Normalization with the Zionist Entity Without a Just Palestinian State

At the heart of President Tebboune’s remarks was Algeria’s unshakable support for the Palestinian cause. In unequivocal terms, he stated:

“We will not normalize our relations with the Zionist entity until a two-state solution is effectively implemented. This position was clearly communicated to the United States.”

He emphasized that Algeria remains committed to the unity of the Palestinian people, referencing the pivotal reconciliation conference held in Algiers. Algeria, he affirmed, views the division among Palestinian factions as a strategic setback to the broader liberation movement, and thus continues to support efforts that foster unity and resistance.

President Tebboune also praised the recent diplomatic engagement of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the Palestinian dossier, acknowledging Riyadh’s historical support for Algeria during its own liberation struggle and subsequent crises.

“We maintain strong, brotherly relations with Saudi Arabia, a country that has stood by us during wars and uprisings,” he said.

Algerian-French Relations: Strained, but Not Irretrievable

Touching on the often complex and volatile relations with France, President Tebboune offered a nuanced perspective. While acknowledging the difficulties rooted in historical memory and political provocations, he clarified:

“I have no personal problem with President Emmanuel Macron. However, a radical minority in France has made Algeria their political obsession.”

He highlighted the enduring pain of colonialism and rejected any attempts to erase the historical memory of the Algerian people:

“We will never renounce our memory.”

This carefully measured rhetoric indicates a potential for future normalization, but only under conditions of mutual respect and recognition of historical truths.

Reliable Partner in a Multipolar World

President Tebboune underscored Algeria’s balanced foreign policy, rooted in sovereign interests and respect for international law. Algeria, he said, maintains positive relations with global powers, including the United States, China, and Russia:

“No one can use us against another. We hold to a sovereign, independent line.”

In terms of energy policy, he reiterated Algeria’s reliability as a strategic partner to Europe, particularly in the context of recent energy volatility. The country, he assured, continues to honor its international commitments and strengthen its infrastructure, including through robust cooperation with Italy and other European partners.

Algeria: A Pillar in Lebanon’s Reconstruction

Regarding Lebanon, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast support, citing recent energy aid and broader plans to assist in rebuilding critical infrastructure. A committee of Algerian engineers will oversee the implementation of projects valued at approximately $200 million, focused on restoring essential services and promoting economic recovery.

“Algeria stands as a principal partner in Lebanon’s reconstruction effort,” he said, underlining the depth of Algerian-Lebanese solidarity.

On Syria: Non-Intervention, but Open-Handed Support

Addressing the evolving situation in Syria, President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s non-interventionist stance, affirming:

“We are not opposed to the changes occurring in Syria. We observe a genuine intent for reform.”

He highlighted Algeria’s willingness to assist should the Syrian state formally request support, while cautiously noting that Syria will not return to its pre-war state. On the subject of normalization between Syria and the Zionist entity, the president was clear:

“Every leader must act in accordance with the aspirations of their people.”
