Noureddine Yassa Receives BSW Solar to Strengthen Solar Partnership

By Dr. Hana Saada

Noureddine Yassa, Secretary of State to the Minister of Energy in charge of Renewable Energies, received on Wednesday in Algiers a delegation from the German Federal Association of the Solar Industry (BSW Solar). Led by David Wedepohl, Managing Director for International Affairs, and in the presence of senior officials from the ministry, the meeting marked a pivotal step in enhancing cooperation in the field of renewable energy between Algeria and Germany, according to a statement by the ministry.

The gathering provided an opportunity to explore avenues for bilateral cooperation as well as investment and partnership prospects between Algerian companies — notably the Sonelgaz Group — and BSW Solar. The German association represents more than 1,100 companies active across all stages of the solar energy and storage value chain, offering considerable potential for collaboration.

German Expertise to Support Technology Transfer

Talks also focused on the localization of solar system component manufacturing in Algeria. The goal is to benefit from German expertise to foster technology transfer, capacity development, and specialized training. Discussions also covered cooperation prospects in green hydrogen production projects, electricity transport, and smart grid integration.

In this context, the “TaqatHy+” project was highlighted. This ambitious program aims to advance renewable energy, green hydrogen, and energy efficiency in Algeria. The memorandum of understanding signed in February 2024 between Sonelgaz and BSW Solar was also emphasized. It seeks to boost national capacities through the exchange of technical know-how, ultimately enabling the local manufacturing and integration of equipment and the expansion of the national industrial base in this sector.

Algeria Committed to a Sustainable Energy Transition

Secretary of State Yassa stressed that this collaboration aligns with Algeria’s new energy vision, which places sustainable energy transition at the forefront of its national priorities. He emphasized Algeria’s advantages, including its vast natural resources, skilled labor force, and existing infrastructure. He also described BSW Solar as an ideal partner for transferring best practices and cutting-edge technologies to Algeria.

The German delegation expressed keen interest in the Algerian market, identifying it as a promising environment for establishing long-term strategic partnerships — thanks in part to Algeria’s favorable legal framework and joint bilateral initiatives such as the “TaqatHy+” project.

Headquartered in Berlin, BSW Solar plays a key role in shaping solar policy and legislation in Germany and across Europe. It also facilitates the global expansion of German solar companies by offering technical and professional guidance and support.
