Omar Adadoua: “Algeria Is Poised to Become Africa’s Industrial Powerhouse”

Algiers, Algeria– Monday, July 28, 2025 | In an exclusive interview with Dzair Tube, prominent Algerian entrepreneur and economic expert Omar Adadoua delivered a sweeping overview of Algeria’s economic transformation under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, asserting that the North African country is on a definitive path toward becoming a leading industrial and economic force on the African continent. The interview, which coincided with the high-level Algerian-Italian business forum held in Rome, touched on bilateral partnerships, national food security, transformative industrial policy, and critical infrastructure development.

Adadoua hailed the recent strategic rapprochement between Algeria and Italy, describing the southern European nation as “Algeria’s principal industrial and technological partner in Europe.” He underscored Italy’s unmatched expertise in food-processing industries, agricultural transformation, and technology — areas that Algeria is actively prioritizing in its post-hydrocarbon economic diversification efforts.

“Italy has always stood by Algeria,” Adadoua noted. “During the War of Liberation, the Black Decade, and even during our most challenging economic times, Italy remained a friend. Today, it is a strategic partner.”

He revealed that Italian firms are already investing in key Algerian provinces such as Tindouf and Adrar, targeting over 50,000 hectares for the cultivation of durum wheat. The envisioned output will be processed using advanced Italian food technologies, with a portion destined for export while the remainder strengthens Algeria’s domestic reserves.

Food Security and Agricultural Transformation

Citing the surplus in Algeria’s industrial tomato production as a case in point, Adadoua emphasized the necessity of structured planning and agricultural cooperatives capable of anticipating industrial demand.

“Algeria is now self-sufficient in processed tomatoes. But we must go further. Farmers should be producers only — marketing, supply forecasting, and processing must be handled by structured cooperatives, like in Italy,” he stressed.

He lamented the losses incurred due to the lack of coordination, arguing that without proper storage and processing facilities, agricultural abundance can become a liability rather than an asset. “Tomatoes have a 20-day shelf life. Either we develop massive processing capacities, or we continue to face post-harvest losses,” he warned.

Industrialization and Strategic Resources

Adadoua lauded President Tebboune’s decision to move forward with the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron mine in partnership with China, characterizing it as a sovereign decision that “put an end to opportunistic ambitions from certain foreign players.”

“Algeria is no longer a land to be dictated to,” he declared. “We have phosphates, lithium, iron, oil, and gas. What matters now is not extraction, but transformation.”

He pointed out the glaring disparity between raw material exports and the revenue potential of processed goods. Using lithium and crude oil as examples, Adadoua underscored that refining and converting resources locally can multiply revenues fivefold or more. “We must move from raw to finished products. That’s where real national wealth is built,” he asserted.

Startup Ecosystem and Technological Leap

Reflecting on Algeria’s meteoric rise in the startup sector, Adadoua proudly noted that the country has grown from just 200 startups in 2020 to over 7,000 today, a figure he expects will surpass 20,000 by 2027.

“This success story earned Algeria first place at the International Entrepreneurship Forum in Indiana, USA. Why? Because we’ve created an ecosystem — no taxes, zero-interest loans, institutional support. Our youth now see a future in innovation,” he said.

He added that this momentum is bolstered by Algeria’s strong ties with technology leaders such as Italy, which supplies the machinery for nearly all Algerian food-processing facilities, from pasta production to confectionery lines.

Automotive and Pharmaceutical Industries

Adadoua did not shy away from discussing controversial files, particularly the automotive sector. He criticized former assembly practices, notably by French automaker Renault, accusing it of making “mockery” of Algeria’s integration requirements.

“After 10 years, they only reached 7% local integration. That’s unacceptable,” he stated. “Algeria won’t accept semi-knockdown operations anymore. We need real manufacturing, real value chains.”

On the pharmaceutical front, Adadoua revealed that Algeria now covers 80% of its domestic needs and has recently begun producing cancer treatment drugs and injection solutions locally, including via partnerships with Jordanian firms.

Water Resources and Infrastructure Sovereignty

Highlighting a critical yet often overlooked sector, Adadoua praised the government’s massive investment in desalination infrastructure. He confirmed that five major seawater desalination plants are already operational, with plans to increase the number to fifteen.

“These plants are Algerian-made and operated 100% by Algerians. Today, taps are no longer dry in households. That’s a revolution compared to what we had a few years ago,” he explained.

Tourism: The Unfulfilled Potential

On a more critical note, Adadoua voiced deep concerns about the tourism sector, particularly the coastal tourism industry, which he described as vastly underdeveloped and overpriced.

“We’ve made progress in Saharan tourism, but in coastal zones, it’s dismal. One night in a tourist resort costs 8 million centimes — and for what? No proper service, no cleanliness,” he said candidly.

He called for a total paradigm shift: opening up the Algerian coast to both local and foreign private investment, fostering competition, and drastically expanding hotel capacity to drive down prices and stimulate domestic tourism.

A Vision for 2030 and Beyond

Concluding the interview, Omar Adadoua expressed confidence that Algeria is on course to achieve — and potentially surpass — President Tebboune’s target of $400 billion in revenues by 2030. With the pace of reforms, increased global interest, and a government committed to industrial sovereignty, he predicts the country could eventually reach the $1 trillion mark in total GDP.

“Algeria is no longer merely reacting to crises — it is building a sustainable economic model. The foundations are there: energy, minerals, stability, and above all, political will. Now is the time to act,” he affirmed.

The interview, rich with data, vision, and conviction, paints a compelling portrait of a nation in economic metamorphosis — one that aspires not only to rise, but to lead.
