On August 8: The Sea is Beautiful, But the Homeland is Sublime – And “Aâmi ‘Uncle’ Tebboune” is Priceless

Algiers, Algeria | To those who attempt to distort the collective consciousness of Algerians and manipulate historical dates, let it be made unequivocally clear: the Algerian people are far too discerning to be ensnared by the contrived symbolism of the 8th of August. They know precisely who orchestrates this charade—France, lurking in the shadows, and the Moroccan Makhzen, skulking in the background—both playing the role of inept directors in a poorly staged political farce.

Today is Friday, and the Algerian agenda is crystal clear: the sanctity of the Friday prayer comes first, followed by an afternoon at the beach or a family outing, and in the evening, heartfelt prayers against the agitators of discord and the enablers of foreign agendas.

But why, one might ask, was August 8 chosen specifically?

It is no accident. The date is tethered to a page in the history of the French Revolution—August 8, 1792—the day insurgents stormed the Tuileries Palace, toppling the monarchy, paving the way for the proclamation of the First French Republic.

The aim is transparent: to implant French revolutionary symbolism into Algerian consciousness. Yet such attempts are destined for futility. Algeria’s historical identity is carved in the blood and sacrifice of its own heroes, not borrowed from the echoes of Parisian upheavals.

And any comparison is, frankly, not only absurd but laughable.

In the West, street demonstrations are often staged to pressure governments into action for the oppressed. In Algeria, however, government and people stand united in the same trench, defending just causes—first and foremost, the plight of Palestine and Gaza—without the need for performative theatrics in public squares.

The Algerian people stand as one heart with their army and their President, Abdelmadjid Tebboune—or, as they fondly call him, “Aâmi ‘Uncle’ Tebboune.” The epithet is neither a token of flattery nor a political gimmick. It is an affirmation of a bond rooted in patriotic affection and mutual trust, for this is a President who emerged from the very womb of the people and carries their burdens deep within his heart.

So let them in Paris revel in their own anniversaries. Let the Makhzen indulge in its delusions. As for us, we proclaim without hesitation: yes, the sea is beautiful—but the homeland is more beautiful still. And “Uncle ‘Aâmi’  Tebboune” remains beyond price.
