On Sidelines of High-Level North Africa Forum, Algeria, Italy Reaffirm Strategic Energy Partnership

The meeting underscored the depth and strategic nature of AlgerianโItalian relations, particularly in the energy sector, at a time of accelerating global shifts in energy security and transition policies.
The discussions focused on reviewing prospects for bilateral cooperation and partnership between Algeria and Italy, with particular emphasis on the oil and gas industry. In this context, both sides highlighted the longstanding and exemplary cooperation between Sonatrach and the Italian energy giant Eni, stressing the importance of broadening the scope of this partnership to encompass new areas aligned with evolving energy and environmental priorities.
The exchange also addressed investment opportunities and explored concrete avenues to strengthen the transfer of expertise and know-how between Algerian and Italian companies. Special attention was given to technological cooperation, capacity-building, and the reduction of carbon footprints, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable development and the objectives of the global energy transition.
Within the same framework, the two ministers discussed Italyโs โMattei Plan,โ an initiative aimed at reinforcing cooperation with African countries through support for the development of their natural resources. The plan prioritises key sectors such as energy, oil and gas industries, infrastructure development, and the diversification of supply chains, with the dual objective of enhancing energy security and fostering long-term, sustainable economic growth.
Minister Arkab reaffirmed Algeriaโs strategic role as a reliable supplier of natural gas in the Mediterranean basin, particularly for Italy, highlighting the countryโs pivotal position in ensuring regional energy stability. He further outlined Algeriaโs ongoing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with a particular focus on methane mitigation, as well as the environmental programmes implemented by Sonatrach, including reforestation initiatives and comprehensive plans to curb carbon emissions.
Concluding the discussions, the Minister of State addressed the major challenges associated with the success of the energy transition, notably the scale of required investments and the need for advanced technological mastery. He emphasised the importance of increasing the involvement of European companiesโespecially Italian firmsโin strategic projects related to natural gas development and the gas industry, phosphate extraction and transformation, and carbon-emission reduction initiatives. These priorities, he stressed, form a cornerstone of Algeriaโs vision for a balanced transition that reconciles energy security, economic development, and environmental responsibility.
