In a landmark environmental and civic initiative, Algeria is mobilizing its citizens, institutions, and civil society for a nationwide campaign titled “One Million Trees in One Day”, scheduled for October 25, 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, aims to plant one million trees across all provinces within a single day — an unprecedented effort reflecting Algeria’s growing commitment to environmental preservation and sustainable development.

Considered one of the largest reforestation operations ever organized in a single day on a national scale, the campaign will witness wide participation from public institutions, local authorities, schools, universities, families, associations, and volunteer organizations.

This initiative goes beyond reforestation — it represents a unifying national movement that seeks to engage all sectors of society in restoring and expanding Algeria’s forest resources, combating desertification, and reducing the environmental damage caused by recent forest fires.

The distribution of seedlings and tree species will be tailored to the specific climatic and ecological characteristics of each region, ensuring the use of local, resilient species capable of adapting to diverse soil and weather conditions. Designated planting areas within municipalities, forests, and agricultural zones have already been prepared in coordination with local authorities.

The operation will deploy significant human and technical resources, including forest conservation teams, civil protection units, local volunteers, and community organizations, with local authorities supervising implementation on the ground.

This campaign forms part of Algeria’s long-term environmental strategy, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, which has in recent years focused on rehabilitating burned forests, expanding fruit and forest plantations, and strengthening urban greening programs to enhance the environmental quality of major cities.

More than an environmental action, the “One Million Trees in One Day” campaign stands as a powerful message of Algeria’s commitment to a green transition, rooted in the protection of natural resources, climate resilience, and ecological balance. It also serves as an open call for citizens to participate in safeguarding their homeland from environmental threats, promoting a culture of planting as a patriotic and collective responsibility.

Set for October 25, this national tree-planting campaign promises to be an environmental, educational, and awareness-raising milestone, reflecting the heightened ecological consciousness of Algerians and positioning Algeria as a leading regional model in reforestation and collective environmental action.
