One of Two Terrorists Eliminated in Khenchela Identified as Veteran Militant and Former Emir Merrikhi Abderahmane

Following a successful ANP operation in Oued Boudekhane on June 3, authorities confirm the identity of a long-time terrorist who joined armed groups in 2007; efforts continue to identify the second neutralized militant.

Algiers, Algeria | June 5th, 2025 — In a significant blow to terrorist networks operating in eastern Algeria, the Ministry of National Defense (MDN) announced the identification of one of the two terrorists eliminated during a search and sweep operation carried out by detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP) on June 3, 2025. The operation took place in the Oued Boudekhane area, within the Khenchela military sector of the 5th Military Region.

According to the MDN’s statement issued Thursday, the identity of one of the two neutralized terrorists has been formally confirmed. The militant has been identified as Merrikhi Abderahmane, alias Hodhaïfa Abou Bouchra, a notorious figure who joined terrorist groups in 2007. At the time of his neutralization, he held the rank of “emir” within a terrorist group active in the eastern region of the country.

The statement emphasized that the operation resulted in the elimination of two terrorists and the recovery of two Kalashnikov-type submachine guns along with a quantity of ammunition, significantly disrupting terrorist activities in the region.

The identification process for the second terrorist remains ongoing, as forensic and intelligence units continue their efforts to complete the investigation.

The Ministry reaffirmed the commitment of the ANP to relentlessly pursue all remaining terrorist elements, in line with national defense and security objectives aimed at preserving the country’s stability and protecting citizens.
