Orchestrated Campaigns Target FAF and Algeria’s National Team: Politics Masquerading as Sports Criticism
✍️ BY: Dr. Hana Saada
Algiers – September 2025 – In recent weeks, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and the national team, Les Fennecs, have found themselves at the center of a calculated and hostile campaign, spearheaded by external circles that seek to sow discord under the pretext of sports commentary. The orchestrated nature of this offensive has become glaringly evident following Algeria’s draw against Guinea in Casablanca, a result that—while disappointing to fans—was immediately weaponized by detractors to undermine both the Federation and the players.
What stands out is not the criticism itself—criticism is a natural component of professional sport—but rather the unmistakable political undertones embedded in this discourse. The timing, tone, and channels used reveal that the attacks are far from spontaneous expressions of concern. Instead, they constitute a deliberate strategy aimed at destabilizing Algerian football institutions and, by extension, shaking the morale of an entire nation whose identity and pride are deeply intertwined with its sporting achievements.
It is worth emphasizing that the national team, under the leadership of Vladimir Petković, continues to lead Group H of the World Cup 2026 qualifiers with 19 points, maintaining a comfortable four-point cushion over Mozambique and Uganda. Even in moments of collective underperformance, the team has shown resilience by avoiding defeat. As every football connoisseur knows, even the most celebrated teams in the world undergo transitional phases. Algeria’s current trajectory remains firmly oriented towards securing a long-awaited return to the World Cup stage after a 12-year absence.
Yet, rather than acknowledging this broader perspective, hostile voices have chosen to amplify minor setbacks, portraying them as symptomatic of systemic failure. This rhetoric serves no sporting purpose; instead, it betrays a clear agenda: to weaken the credibility of the FAF, to erode trust between the team and its supporters, and ultimately to politicize the very fabric of Algerian football.
The Algerian people, however, are no strangers to such tactics. History has shown that external attempts to fracture national unity—whether through politics, media, or sport—are met with resilience and vigilance. Algerians must remain steadfast in supporting their federation and players, while demanding constructive accountability rather than succumbing to toxic narratives engineered abroad.
