Over 1.3 Million Trees Planted Across Algeria in a Historic National Reforestation Campaign

Algiers – October 2025 – In a resounding demonstration of national solidarity and environmental commitment, Algeria successfully planted more than 1.3 million trees during the nationwide reforestation campaign held on Saturday, according to the Director General of Forests (DGF), Djamel Touahria. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, in partnership with the environmental association “Green Algeria”, has exceeded its initial target of one million trees, reaching an impressive 1.39 million saplings planted across the national territory.
Speaking to Radio Algérienne on Sunday, Touahria praised the “extraordinary mobilization” that led to this success, underscoring that the campaign’s triumph reflects the collective will of the Algerian people to protect and rehabilitate their natural environment. The trees planted include a wide variety of species, notably fruit-bearing trees such as olive, pistachio, and carob, chosen carefully according to the geographical and ecological characteristics of each region.
Unprecedented Civil Society Engagement
This remarkable achievement, Touahria emphasized, was made possible thanks to the massive participation of civil society, with volunteers, associations, local communities, and youth movements joining forces nationwide. The Director General noted that the enthusiastic turnout at many planting sites was so overwhelming that additional land areas had to be mobilized to accommodate the surge in participation.
Touahria called on all participants and organizations involved to ensure regular monitoring and watering of the newly planted trees, stressing that “the sustainability and success of this campaign depend on continuous care and follow-up.” He further highlighted the broader objectives of this initiative — namely, the expansion of forested areas, the rehabilitation of fire-damaged zones, and the fight against desertification, which remains a pressing environmental challenge in Algeria.
The reforestation drive, he confirmed, will continue until March 21, marking the official end of the national tree-planting season.
A 98% Success Rate and a Sharp Decline in Wildfires
Addressing ongoing reforestation efforts under the Green Dam (Barrage Vert) project, Touahria revealed that 26,000 hectares have been successfully reforested so far, with an exceptional success rate of nearly 98%. He credited this progress to the synergized efforts of all stakeholders and the involvement of forestry experts specialized in sustainable land management.
Algeria aims to reforest 400,000 hectares by 2030, reaffirming its commitment to ecological resilience and environmental security.
In a related context, the DGF chief provided an encouraging update on the national campaign for forest fire prevention and control, launched in May. Since the start of the season, Algeria has recorded 880 fire outbreaks nationwide — marking a dramatic 80% decrease compared to previous years. The total area affected stands at 4,090 hectares, including 900 hectares of forestland and 200 hectares of orchards, with the remainder composed of shrubland and grassland.
Touahria described these results as “highly positive,” attributing them to enhanced coordination, early warning systems, and stronger public awareness.
