Algiers – November 2025 – Mandated by the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Azzouz Nasri, a delegation of Algerian parliamentarians will take part in the Forum of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the accompanying Summit of Presidents, scheduled in Cairo from 28 to 30 November 2025. The participation — confirmed in an official communiqué from the upper chamber — forms part of a joint parliamentary delegation representing both houses of Algeria’s Parliament and underlines Algiers’ commitment to constructive regional engagement.
Organised under the banner “Strengthening economic cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean: revitalising the Barcelona process on its thirtieth anniversary,” the forum assembles policy-makers, parliamentary leaders and regional experts to confront the pressing strategic and economic questions that shape Mediterranean stability. The programme foresees plenary and bureau meetings alongside permanent-committee sessions, and includes two dedicated working sessions focused on peace and stability in the Mediterranean space and on building a positive regional dynamic centered on economic cooperation and the new Mediterranean pact.
The delegation from the Council of the Nation is led by Senator Mohamed Tahar Bilal and includes Senators Chérif Hamdi, Ghanem Fakhr Eddine Abdelraouf, Abdelhamid Boucherma, Khafallah Bilal and Mehni Haddadou. Their mandate, issued by the chamber’s presidency, gives them the authority to engage in the forum’s deliberations and to represent Algeria’s institutional voice in discussions that bear directly on regional cooperation, security and development.
Algeria’s presence at the forum is deliberate and coherent. By sending a cross-party, bicameral delegation, the Council of the Nation projects a unified parliamentary posture consistent with the country’s foreign-policy vision: a Mediterranean space that is peaceful, balanced and grounded in mutual respect. Participation in the UfM Parliamentary Assembly offers Algiers a platform to advance its priorities — economic integration, stability and collaborative development — within a format that links legislative engagement to diplomatic and institutional initiatives across both shores.
The forum’s twin focus on security and the economic pact for the Mediterranean corresponds with Algeria’s longstanding emphasis on stability as a precondition for sustainable development. The working sessions will therefore provide the Algerian delegation opportunities to contribute to policy frameworks that aim to revive the Barcelona process and to shape mechanisms for closer economic cooperation, greater connectivity and pragmatic responses to regional challenges.
