Algiers, Algeria | June 24th, 2025 — As part of Algeria’s commitment to advancing international parliamentary diplomacy, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Mr. Azouz Nasri, received on Tuesday José João Abrantes, the President of the Constitutional Court of the Portuguese Republic, who is currently on an official visit to Algiers. Mr. Abrantes was accompanied by a high-level delegation and the Ambassador of Portugal to Algeria, Mr. Gonçalo de Barros da Costa.

The meeting, held in a spirit of cordiality and mutual esteem, underscored the strength of Algerian-Portuguese relations—anchored in cooperation, shared constitutional ideals, and deep-rooted friendship within the Mediterranean space.

President Nasri commended the longstanding ties between the two nations and highlighted the potential for expanded cooperation in various domains, including political, economic, and institutional sectors. He emphasized the importance of consolidating bilateral dialogue and presented the significant constitutional advances Algeria has made, particularly the establishment of the Constitutional Court under the 2020 Constitution—an embodiment of the reforms of the “New Algeria.”

In response, President Abrantes expressed his deep appreciation for Algeria’s historical solidarity with the Portuguese people, notably Algeria’s unwavering support during the Carnation Revolution of 1974. He noted the parallels between the constitutional paths of both countries and affirmed Portugal’s interest in enhancing dialogue and judicial cooperation with Algeria.

Both parties praised the shared values of democratic transition and constitutional governance. Mr. Nasri concluded the meeting by reaffirming Algeria’s principled commitment to supporting just causes around the world, particularly the Palestinian and Sahrawi struggles, in full alignment with the spirit of the November Revolution and international legality.
