Participation of Arkab in G7 Ministerial Conference: Algeria Reaffirms its Energy Commitments

ALGIERS- Algeria’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, emphasized Algeria’s energy policies and future ambitions at the G7 Ministerial Conference on Climate, Energy, and Environment, held in Turin, Italy, as part of Italy’s presidency of the Group of Seven (G7) industrialized countries.

Arkab highlighted Algeria’s strategy to increase primary energy production, particularly natural gas, with a commitment to secure long-term supply while reducing the carbon footprint. He emphasized Algeria’s role as a reliable global energy supplier, backed by significant investments in exploration, production, and gas transportation infrastructure. Algeria aims to increase gas production to 110 billion cubic meters per year through an investment program of over $52 billion.

Raising Renewable Energy Capacities

Arkab discussed Algeria’s energy transition towards a diversified and balanced energy mix to meet increasing demand sustainably, economically, and safely, while reducing environmental impacts. Algeria has committed to achieving 30% renewable energy in its national energy mix by 2035, with plans to reach a capacity of 15,000 megawatts, of which 3000 megawatts have already been initiated.

He highlighted Algeria’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas and methane emissions, with Sonatrach, the national energy company, undertaking significant voluntary investments to reduce flared gas and methane emissions. Arkab also mentioned Algeria’s project to plant over 420 million trees over 10 years to promote carbon accumulation and combat climate change.

Hydrogen, a State Priority

Arkab emphasized hydrogen development as a priority for the Algerian government, leveraging Algeria’s significant assets in solar energy. The SoutH2 Corridor project aims to connect Algeria to Europe via a pipeline for transporting green hydrogen produced locally from clean sources, positioning Algeria as a leader in the hydrogen industry.

He also highlighted the importance of strengthening electrical interconnections within Algeria and with Europe to accelerate the energy transition and support regional development. The extensive project of electrical interconnection of the southern Algerian network with the national network will improve national electricity supply, open export prospects to Europe, and provide energy to neighboring African countries.

Regarding the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project, Arkab emphasized its social, economic, and strategic significance. The TSGP will connect Nigeria to Europe via Algeria and Niger, supporting local development, enhancing energy security, and providing a catalyst for North African energy integration.

Arkab concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation between G7 countries and developing nations to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development. He reiterated Algeria’s support for global efforts to address climate change and energy security, particularly in Africa, stressing the need to ensure energy access for all and work together towards a better, more prosperous, and sustainable future.
