Algeria, October 26, 2023 – The nation of Algeria is in mourning today as it bids farewell to one of its most revered heroes, Colonel Youcef Khatib, affectionately known as “Si Hassan.” Colonel Khatib, who was a prominent figure in the historic Wilaya IV, passed away at the age of 91. His remarkable journey, from a medical student to a distinguished leader in the fight for independence, leaves an indelible mark on Algeria’s history.

Born on November 19, 1932, in Chlef, Colonel Khatib’s early education in his hometown set the stage for his future as a revolutionary. After obtaining his baccalaureate in 1953, he enrolled at the University of Algiers, Faculty of Medicine, with dreams of a medical career. Little did he know that his destiny was bound to a different path.
In 1955, Colonel Khatib joined the ranks of the National Liberation Front (FLN), under the leadership of Mohamed Seghir Nekkache. The FLN’s mission was to mobilize students and integrate them into the revolution, sparking a fire within the young medical student.
Following the historic student strike on May 19, 1956, Colonel Khatib embraced the Revolution in Médéa, where he established connections with fellow freedom fighters. In June 1956, he officially joined the National Liberation Army (ALN) in the Tamezguida region. His role was pivotal, providing essential medical support and training for paramedics in the heart of the Wilaya IV.
In 1959, Colonel Khatib’s leadership abilities shone through, as he was appointed the commander of the 3rd region of Wilaya IV, coinciding with the “Challe” military operation in Chlef and Ouarsenis. His dedication and bravery in the face of adversity earned him the responsibility of leading the entire Wilaya IV after the martyrdom of Mohamed Bounaama on August 8, 1961, a role he fulfilled until Algeria’s independence.
Post-independence, Colonel Khatib continued to serve his country in various capacities. He held a prominent position as a member of the political bureau of the National Liberation Front (FLN) in 1964. His commitment to national unity was evident as he chaired the National Dialogue Commission in October 1993 and later the National Accord Conference in 1994.
Colonel Khatib’s tireless dedication extended beyond the battlefields. He was a staunch advocate for preserving Algeria’s historical memory, emphasizing the importance of documenting the nation’s collective history.
The Minister of Moudjahidines and Rights Holders, Mr. Laïd Rebiga, expressed his condolences to the late Colonel’s family and comrades, acknowledging his significant role in Algeria’s glorious struggle for independence.
Colonel Youcef Khatib will be laid to rest at the Martyrs’ Square in El Alia Cemetery, Algiers, following the Dohr prayer on Thursday. His legacy as a courageous freedom fighter and a dedicated nation-builder will forever be etched in the hearts of the Algerian people, who remember him with deep respect and gratitude.
