Petković After Algeria’s World Cup Qualification: “A Deserved Triumph… Mahrez Silenced Every Doubter”

Algiers – October 2025 – National coach Vladimir Petković hailed Algeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a fully deserved and hard-earned achievement, praising his players’ collective spirit and the unwavering support of fans across the nation. Speaking at a post-match press conference following the decisive encounter, Petković described the qualification as a “moment of pride that restores the Greens to the global stage.”
“We’ve earned this qualification through merit,” the Swiss tactician affirmed. “Today, we celebrate — but tomorrow, the work resumes. Our next match against Uganda will be approached with absolute seriousness, because qualification must never lead to complacency.”
Petković, who took charge of the national team earlier this year, attributed the team’s success to unity and discipline, emphasizing that “the spirit of the group was the key to victory.” He went on to express appreciation for the entire squad: “I salute every single player, even those who were not on the field today. This qualification is the fruit of collective effort. We’ve lived some of the most beautiful moments since the start of our journey, but we must stay grounded and continue to progress.”
Looking ahead, Petković stressed that the upcoming phase will be decisive in shaping the team for the next Africa Cup of Nations, cautioning that “places in the squad will be highly contested starting from the November training camp.” He urged all players to seize their opportunities to prove themselves and secure their positions in the lineup.
The coach also spoke about newcomer Belghali, revealing that he had been monitoring the player “for quite some time” and had gathered enough data to assess his potential. “He showed many positive things during the training camp and in the last match,” Petković said, adding that his performance would “ignite healthy competition within the team.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the national team after the loss to Guinea, the coach admitted that “everything changed completely from the second half against Uganda,” marking a turning point that ultimately led to qualification.
Petković also expressed gratitude to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for his continuous support and congratulatory message to the national team, saying that such encouragement “serves as an additional motivation to keep delivering outstanding performances.”
Concluding his remarks, the coach reaffirmed his determination for the road ahead: “Our goal now is to finish the qualifiers with another victory against Uganda before shifting full focus to AFCON preparations. As for Riyad Mahrez — with his performance today, he has silenced every critic and reaffirmed his class. This team is writing a new chapter of glory on the path to 2026.”
