Expulsion of Freedom Marchers and Journalistic Censorship in Tangier Denounced as Systematic Violation of Human Rights by the Moroccan Regime

Algiers, Algeria | June 1st, 2025 —  In a sharply worded statement, the Representative of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in Spain, Abdulah Arabi, has fiercely denounced the Moroccan regime’s violent obstruction of the “March for the Freedom of Sahrawi Political Prisoners” upon its attempted entry into Tangier.

Launched two months ago from France and led by Claude Mangin, the wife of Sahrawi political prisoner Naama Asfari, the march had peacefully crossed several Spanish regions, raising awareness across Europe about the plight of Sahrawi detainees held in Moroccan prisons. Participants included activists from numerous EU countries, alongside representatives of unions, civil society organizations, and political movements.

Despite its peaceful nature and international support, the march was forcefully barred from entering Morocco. In a chilling display of authoritarianism, Moroccan authorities reportedly compelled a journalist to erase content from her mobile phone—an act that the POLISARIO considers a blatant assault on press freedom and a grave violation of human rights.

Abdulah Arabi stated, “This kind of repression is not new, but it starkly reveals the Moroccan regime’s deep fear of truth and justice. Forcing peaceful demonstrators out and silencing journalists only underscores the illegitimacy of their actions in Western Sahara.”

The ultimate goal of the march was to reach Kenitra prison, a notorious site where numerous Sahrawi political prisoners are held in what UN committees and international watchdogs have repeatedly described as inhumane and unlawful conditions. The Front POLISARIO stressed that these individuals are being punished solely for demanding the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination and independence.

“This latest expulsion is yet another shameful chapter in Morocco’s systematic repression of the Sahrawi people,” said Arabi. “The regime’s relentless crackdown on human rights must no longer be tolerated or ignored by the international community.”

In light of these developments, the Front POLISARIO has called on human rights organizations, particularly those in Spain and across the European Union, to speak out against these violations and to exert diplomatic pressure on Morocco for the immediate and unconditional release of all Sahrawi political prisoners.

“The silence of the international community serves as complicity,” Arabi warned. “We will continue to denounce the illegality of these detentions and fight for the freedom of our people, whose only crime is their resistance against occupation and their defense of justice.”

This incident is likely to further intensify scrutiny of Morocco’s conduct in the occupied territories of Western Sahara and its treatment of Sahrawi activists, which has long drawn international condemnation.
