Political Parties Regain Ground Ahead of Critical Electoral Milestones

Algiers – December  2025 – Algeria’s political scene is undergoing a notable reactivation as political parties reinvest in the field with renewed vigor ahead of the upcoming electoral deadlines. Recent developments, notably President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s audiences with leaders of various political formations—including, most recently, Louisa Hanoune, Secretary General of the Workers’ Party—have triggered a wave of mobilization and strategic repositioning, setting the stage for a heightened political contest.

This revival comes at a time when national circumstances demand a reaffirmation of civic engagement and a collective defense of an inclusive, democratic Algeria, unified in its values and respectful of its diverse components. The stakes place heavy responsibility on political parties to reconnect with citizens, particularly the youth, and reinsert themselves into a public debate that has, for years, been hindered by mistrust, disengagement, and stagnation.

“A Unified and Unifying Algeria” — Political Action Rooted in History and Identity

The president of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, articulated this imperative during a visit to Aïn Témouchent—a symbolic stop at a historic site where, on December 9, 1960, demonstrators defied colonial oppression, chanting that “Algeria is Algerian, Muslim, and independent.”

Hassani Cherif’s message, carried through his public statements, emphasizes continuity: the enduring strength of national identity and the intergenerational transmission of patriotism that sustained resistance in the past and sustains unity today. The presence of youth commemorating the anniversary, he noted, is not merely ceremonial but a renewed affirmation of historical loyalty, proof that “the Algerian homeland remains one, united, and unifying.”

His commentary takes on added urgency in a context where, according to him, the political class must draw lessons from the revolutionary spirit of December 1960: unity, sovereignty, and an uncompromising defense of Algeria’s territorial integrity—principles that remain vital in confronting contemporary threats and external plots.

Expanding Presence in the South: A Strategic Reorientation

A parallel dynamic is unfolding in the South, where political actors are intensifying activity, seeking both to establish a more profound territorial presence and respond to the socioeconomic aspirations of local populations.

In Blida, Sawt Echaab party leader Lamine Osmani convened militants to emphasize the need for electoral participation as a means to restore representational legitimacy and address citizen concerns. His discourse underscores a dual agenda: political professionalization through the formation of qualified cadres, and the re-establishment of durable communication channels with the public.

Osmani’s insistence on continuous engagement reflects a broader recognition that the electorate is increasingly demanding accountability, policy coherence, and a credible alternative vision—something parties must now demonstrate, not merely claim.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Rally (RND) took an unprecedented step by holding its national bureau meeting in Tamanrasset, signaling a strategic pivot toward peripheral regions historically marginalized in national politics. This move, described as part of a broader commitment to geographical openness, embodies the party’s attempt to recast itself as a grassroots organization responsive to diverse territorial realities.

Political Vision and Social Cohesion: The Front El-Moustakbel Agenda

In Ouargla, El-Moustakbel party president Fateh Boutbig delivered a speech characterized by strong support for national reforms, commending the state’s anti-corruption efforts and the army’s unwavering role in safeguarding national security. He argued that Algeria’s future depends on the continued pursuit of structural reforms and the unification of political and social forces in the service of development.

Boutbig’s intervention stresses that the political class must now transcend ideological fragmentation and engage proactively with citizens, particularly in the South, where economic and social challenges are acute. His agenda places special emphasis on empowering youth, advancing alternative economic initiatives, and promoting women’s participation as indispensable elements of a sustainable, forward-looking state.

Moreover, Boutbig affirmed his party’s readiness to participate constructively in the upcoming elections, proposing practical initiatives aimed at improving public services and fostering local investment—responses tailored to the population’s evolving expectations. For him, the coming stage will demand unprecedented synergy, resilience, and capacity to turn national aspirations into concrete outcomes.
