ALGIERS- The political landscape in Algeria is witnessing renewed activity as the country prepares for the upcoming presidential election scheduled for December 2024. Over the past weekend, the headquarters of the country’s main political parties came alive with meetings and gatherings, where leaders addressed their respective bases, breaking a prolonged period of political dormancy marked by a lack of activity.

Abdelkader Bengrina, President of Al-Bina Party, seized the occasion of a session of his party’s national council on Friday to position himself regarding the upcoming presidential election, expressing his support for incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

In his address, Bengrina emphasized his movement’s commitment to supporting state institutions, particularly the presidency, which he described as a symbol of continuity, and the National People’s Army, which plays a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s borders, sovereignty, and national cohesion. He praised Algeria’s security and stability, branding it as an exception in the region, and called for its preservation as the cornerstone of the vision for a new Algeria.

Louisa Hanoune, Secretary-General of the Workers’ Party, emphasized the need to “immunize the country against all dangers and destabilization maneuvers from hostile entities” during a gathering in Djelfa. She highlighted the significance of February 24th, commemorating the founding of the General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) and the nationalization of hydrocarbons, as a reminder of Algeria’s achievements in reclaiming political, economic, and diplomatic sovereignty. Hanoune stressed the importance of defending the country and consolidating national unity, declaring that this year is crucial for the nation’s life.

Mustapha Yahi, Secretary-General of the National Democratic Rally (RND), affirmed his party’s dedication to serving Algeria, despite past instances of corruption involving some party members. Speaking at a national gathering marking the 27th anniversary of the RND’s foundation, Yahi reiterated the party’s commitment to strengthening the domestic front and supporting ongoing reforms aimed at building a robust economy. He also praised Algeria’s diplomatic efforts in advocating for just causes, particularly the Palestinian issue.

Abdelkrim Benmbarek, Secretary-General of the National Liberation Front (FLN), emphasized the need for internal restructuring within the party during a meeting with party militants. He declared that the era of corruption and favoritism within the party is over, signaling a shift towards embracing true party loyalists who uphold the law and party regulations. Benmbarek urged party members to work diligently to secure positions in upcoming elections, renouncing past practices that tarnished the party’s reputation.

As Algeria braces itself for the presidential election later this year, these statements and actions from key political figures underscore the heightened political activity and strategic maneuvering taking place across the country in anticipation of the electoral battle ahead.
