Port of Oran Receives Ship Carrying 20,000 Sheep from Spain in Eid Sacrifice Import Program

Fourth Shipment Successfully Unloaded Following Strict Veterinary Inspections; Total of 56,000 Sheep Imported from Spain and Romania to Meet Eid al-Adha Demand

Algiers, Algeria | May 16th, 2025 — A vessel transporting 20,000 sheep from Spain docked on Thursday at the Port of Oran as part of Algeria’s ongoing program to import sacrificial sheep for the upcoming Eid al-Adha celebrations, according to the Oran Port Authority, cited by the APS news agency.

This shipment marks the fourth consignment of sheep arrivals and was promptly unloaded following the completion of rigorous sanitary inspections conducted by veterinary officers. These procedures were overseen by representatives from the Transport Directorate, Agricultural Services, and the Port of Oran authorities to ensure full compliance with health standards.

To date, a total of 56,000 sheep imported from Romania and Spain have been successfully offloaded at the Port of Oran. The necessary logistical arrangements have been mobilized to facilitate the transfer of the animals to quarantine zones, ensuring their health and safety before distribution.

Earlier, on Tuesday, May 13, the Ministry of Transport announced via its official Facebook page the arrival of three additional ships carrying sheep at the ports of Algiers, Jijel, and Annaba, reinforcing the nationwide efforts to meet the demand for sacrificial livestock during this important religious occasion.
