Preservation Initiative: Five Traditional Products Granted National Protection

ALGIERS- In a bid to protect and preserve Algeria’s rich cultural heritage, five traditional artisanal products have been designated as nationally protected items. These include the “Boussâadi Knife” from M’sila, the “Wool Burnous” from Messâad, traditional jewelry from Beni Yenni in Tizi Ouzou, the traditional “Karakou Costume” from Algiers, and the “Tiaret Saddle.”

Kamel-Eddine Bouam, the Director-General of Crafts and Trades at the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts, announced this development during a press briefing held at the Traditional Crafts Support Center in Oran. The move is part of the national program for protecting artisanal products against imitation and theft.

As a testament to Algeria’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity, earlier designations included the “Copperware (Dinanderie) of Constantine,” the pottery of Bider (Tlemcen), the “Babbar Carpets” from Khenchela, and the carpets of Ghardaïa, all receiving the “Quality and Originality Made in Algeria” label.

Bouam highlighted that this protective initiative aligns with the national program’s objectives and the state’s policies aimed at safeguarding these traditional products. He revealed that the Ministry of Tourism and Crafts is working on an annual plan to protect artisanal products, aiming to achieve the protection of 28 to 30 such products nationwide by 2027, ultimately ensuring their international protection.
