Algiers, Algeria | In a firm rebuttal to what it described as erroneous and misleading reporting, the Directorate General of Communication at the Presidency of the Republic has categorically denied information published by the French-language daily El Watan suggesting that the state-owned company Naftal has lost its exclusive monopoly over the importation of lubricants.
According to the Presidency, the newspaper’s edition of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, carried a report claiming that the government had decided to open the market for lubricants to private competitors. The Presidency stressed that this information is completely unfounded and contradicts the legal and regulatory framework that continues to govern the sector.
“After direct verification with the competent authority, we affirm with clarity that Naftal remains the sole and official entity entrusted with the importation of lubricants and tires,” the Presidency declared in an official communiqué, denouncing the dissemination of what it termed “misleading narratives” capable of sowing confusion among economic operators and public opinion.
The statement further recalled that the government’s decision taken during the Council of Ministers held on May 7, 2024, which reaffirmed Naftal’s exclusive prerogatives in the domain of importing lubricants and pneumatic products, “is still valid and has not been subject to any revision or alteration.”
The Presidency also underscored that El Watan’s assertions not only distort facts but also undermine the credibility of professional journalism by circulating unverified claims on matters of national economic interest. It reiterated that the petroleum distribution subsidiary, Naftal—an integral arm of the national energy strategy—retains its full and unchallenged mandate to regulate and manage this strategic sector, which remains under state supervision.
In conclusion, the communiqué called for “a heightened sense of responsibility” within the media landscape, insisting that “accuracy, verification, and professionalism must prevail over sensationalism or speculation, especially in sensitive domains such as energy and hydrocarbons, where Algeria’s sovereignty and economic security are directly engaged.”
