President Abdelmadjid Tebboune: Algeria’s Role in Africa, Trade Discipline, and the Balance Between Sovereignty and Global Integration

Algiers – September 2025 – During his periodic meeting with representatives of the national press, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support to African nations, stressing that such assistance is provided without conditions or hidden agendas. “Algeria helps Africa without counterparty,” declared the Head of State, recalling that more than 65,000 African executives have been trained in Algeria, many of whom today occupy positions of responsibility across the continent.
The President noted that while isolated cases of ingratitude exist, Algeria remains committed to its longstanding foreign policy of solidarity. He pointed to external interference as the source of such anomalies but emphasized that these do not alter Algeria’s consistent approach to African cooperation.
Addressing economic matters, President Tebboune announced that Algeria will continue to exercise strict control over foreign trade while avoiding austerity. He underlined that the country had suffered heavily during years of uncontrolled imports, which destabilized the market and depleted foreign reserves. “Importation is not a problem in itself, but it becomes one when it causes a hemorrhage of currency,” he stated.
He made clear that the government’s strategy is to import only essential goods while fostering competitive domestic production. The President reassured citizens that no shortages will be allowed, highlighting the role of advanced digital systems in monitoring trade flows and responding promptly to market needs.
Tebboune further stressed the importance of balance in consumption, particularly among Algerian youth. He explained that access to international brands should be facilitated within Algeria, so that citizens are not obliged to travel abroad for such purchases. “We are not limiting freedoms, but we must also learn to count our money wisely,” he remarked.
The Head of State concluded by reaffirming that Algeria’s foreign trade policy is guided by rationalization and discipline, ensuring the protection of national reserves while safeguarding citizens’ purchasing power. He summarized this approach with a warning: “We cannot spend all our money today and tomorrow go begging with an empty hand.”
