President Abdelmadjid Tebboune: “The Sacrifices of the Algerian People Were Not in Vain” — A Renewed Pledge to Memory, Sovereignty, and National Continuity

ALGIERS, March 18th, 2026 — On the occasion of the 64th anniversary of Victory Day, commemorated each year on March 19, the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, addressed a message to the Algerian people, reaffirming that the sacrifices made in the struggle for independence “were not in vain,” while underscoring the nation’s continued march toward development, guided by the enduring legacy of the martyrs.
In his address, the Head of State recalled the profound suffering endured by the Algerian people under French colonial rule, emphasizing the historical and symbolic weight of March 19 as the day marking the end of more than one hundred and thirty years of domination. He described a colonial system marked by injustice and stripped of human values, characterized by massacres, destruction, and systematic plunder, and embodying what he referred to as the most extreme forms of oppression and brutality.
Yet, the President noted, this system ultimately revealed its fragility, yielding in the face of the force of right and the immutable laws of history, which have consistently favored peoples striving for freedom—a value inherent to humanity. In this context, he paid tribute to the Algerian people’s triumph, achieved through what he described as a “glorious Revolution whose flame shall never be extinguished,” led by men and women who chose freedom and dignity, or martyrdom, so that Algeria might live.
Recalling a verse from the national anthem Kassaman—“We revolted, it is life or death, and we swore that Algeria would live”—the President highlighted the collective mobilization of the Algerian people, whose unwavering commitment sustained the Revolution from its inception on November 1, 1954, through to its culmination in independence. He described a people deeply rooted in its ancestral identity, whose struggle, marked by immense sacrifice and suffering, ultimately secured a historic victory despite a policy of scorched earth and widespread devastation.
Such a people, he affirmed, remains the custodian of a sacred legacy, continuing its path in fidelity to the message of the martyrs. In this regard, the President stressed that Algeria, faithful to those sacrifices, is today rising to contemporary challenges by strengthening its economic resilience and consolidating the foundations of its sovereignty in a complex regional and international context.
The Head of State further underlined that Algeria has charted a clear course by placing the consolidation of its national economy at the forefront of its priorities, through major structuring and integrated projects forming part of a multidimensional development strategy. He welcomed the tangible progress achieved, attributing it to the mobilization of the nation’s vital forces and competencies, united in their commitment to the supreme interests of the country.
He emphasized that this national project is being realized on the ground through sincere collective will, serving both the State and the people, and rooted in a shared belief in a victorious Algeria—one built through the participation of all and responsive to the aspirations of its citizens.
Concluding his message, the President joined the Algerian people in solemn remembrance of the nation’s martyrs, renewing, on the occasion of Victory Day, the pledge of fidelity to their legacy and to the enduring values for which they gave their lives.
