Algiers – December 2025 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune convened, on Monday, a high-level meeting dedicated to the realization of a cinematic project centered on the figure of Emir Abdelkader, while simultaneously addressing the broader revitalization of Algeria’s film industry. The gathering brought together key figures from the state apparatus and cultural sector, including Boualem Boualem, Director of the Presidential Cabinet; Kamel Sidi Saïd, Presidential Adviser in charge of the General Directorate of Communication; Minister of Culture and Arts Malika Bendouda; Fayçal Metaoui, Special Presidential Adviser for the Cinema Sector; Abdelkader Boudjemaa, Adviser to the Minister of Culture; Salim Aggar, Director of the Emir Abdelkader Foundation; and acclaimed producer-director Anouar Hadj Ismail.
President Tebboune’s enduring commitment to the cinematic arts was reaffirmed. As he emphasized during the January 2024 conference on cinema at the Algiers International Conference Center (CIC), Algerian culture must regain momentum and shine on both national and international stages. In this context, the film on Emir Abdelkader — a symbol of national identity and resilience — assumes a priority status, joining a lineage of works honoring heroes of Algeria’s revolutionary struggle.
The project benefits from the full backing of state institutions. Minister Bendouda confirmed that all necessary institutional and financial resources will be mobilized to ensure its fruition. The presence of the production team at Monday’s session underscores the administration’s determination to expedite progress. While the initiative is not new, President Tebboune has made clear his intent to accelerate its implementation decisively.
This strategic push follows an October 2024 directive during a Council of Ministers session, which launched an international call for the production of a work highlighting the universal significance of Algeria’s modern state founder. Since then, successive consultations have been held to establish the operational framework for the project, with Monday’s meeting serving as a catalytic moment to accelerate its execution.
Beyond the Emir Abdelkader film, the state has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to fostering the national film sector through the training of professionals at institutions such as the National Superior Institute of Cinema in Koléa, the organization of effective distribution circuits, and the establishment of film cities, including the latest inaugurated in Timimoun. Recognizing cinema as both an economic driver and a crucible for youth innovation and creativity, the government is determined to lay the foundations of a sustainable and vibrant national industry capable of producing high-quality artistic content and nurturing future generations of filmmakers.
