Algiers, Algeria | June 19th, 2025 — In a development that marks a significant shift at the top of Algeria’s constitutional authority, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday officially accepted the resignation of Omar Belhadj from his position as President of the Constitutional Court. The decision came during a private audience requested by Belhadj himself, during which he personally submitted a letter citing personal reasons for his desire to be relieved of his duties.

A statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic confirmed the meeting and the subsequent acceptance of the resignation, underscoring the procedural legitimacy of the move and signaling the beginning of a carefully outlined transitional phase.

“In accordance with Article 6 of Presidential Decree No. 22-93 of March 8, 2022, concerning the organizational rules of the Constitutional Court, a deliberation must now be held under the chairmanship of the eldest member of the Court to formally acknowledge the vacancy,” the statement read. “A copy of this deliberation will be transmitted to the President of the Republic, and the interim presidency of the Constitutional Court shall be assumed by the eldest member until a new president is appointed within fifteen days of the notification.”
