President Tebboune Among the “Most Influential” Arab Figures in 2023, According to RT Arabic Poll

ALGIERS- Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has been identified as one of the “most influential” political figures in 2023, according to a poll conducted by Russian news site RT Arabic. In a year marked by tense circumstances, Tebboune’s leadership has not only garnered domestic praise but has also contributed to Algeria’s diplomatic successes on the international stage.

The President’s notable achievements include a remarkable election as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, reaffirming Algeria’s diplomatic resurgence. Throughout the year, Algeria under President Tebboune continued its unwavering commitment to supporting countries under colonial rule and championing just causes. The nation utilized its experience, expertise, and resources to promote peace, stability, and independence.

In September, Algeria achieved a diplomatic milestone by unanimously securing a seat on the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2023-2025 term. This accomplishment highlighted Algeria’s positive role in the field of nuclear disarmament.

Further emphasizing its commitment to international cooperation, Algeria was unanimously reelected in November to serve on the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for a two-year term, starting May 12, 2024. This recognition underscores Algeria’s positive contributions in the realm of chemical disarmament.

The accolades continued as Algeria assumed the presidency of the Committee on Strengthening Cooperation and Assistance to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (CIMAP) for the year 2024. This appointment, replacing Thailand, reflects Algeria’s pioneering role in mine-clearance efforts dating back to the War of National Liberation.

These achievements complement Algeria’s earlier successes, including its membership in the UN Human Rights Council and non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. President Tebboune’s leadership has played a pivotal role in shaping Algeria’s influential role in regional and international affairs.
