President Tebboune Awards the “Athir” Medal to Lebanese Counterpart Joseph Aoun in Recognition of Historic Bilateral Ties

Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 30, 2025 |  In a symbolic gesture underscoring the depth of historic brotherhood and mutual respect between Algeria and Lebanon, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune awarded the prestigious “Athir” Medal—one of the highest distinctions of the National Order of Merit—to the President of the Republic of Lebanon, General Joseph Aoun. The official ceremony took place Tuesday in Algiers during the Lebanese President’s first state visit to Algeria since assuming office.

According to a statement released by the Presidency of the Republic, the medal was conferred “in recognition of the fraternal relations and longstanding harmony between the two brotherly nations, Algeria and Lebanon, as embodied through their unwavering and historic stances.” President Tebboune, himself a recipient of the “Sadr” Medal, emphasized the significance of this honour as a reaffirmation of Algeria’s enduring commitment to Arab solidarity and strategic cooperation.

General Joseph Aoun’s visit to Algeria reflects a broader diplomatic engagement aimed at reinforcing ties in various domains, including political dialogue, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange. His official itinerary included visits to key religious and cultural landmarks, symbolizing Algeria’s openness and spiritual depth.

On Wednesday, President Aoun visited the iconic Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Afrique in Algiers, a testament to Algeria’s religious coexistence and historical heritage. Accompanied by Algeria’s Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, the Lebanese President was given a detailed presentation on the architectural and spiritual significance of this Christian monument, which stands as a beacon of interfaith harmony.

The Lebanese Head of State also toured Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, the Great Mosque of Algiers, one of the largest and most technologically advanced religious complexes in the Muslim world. Welcomed by Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hoceini, rector of the mosque, President Aoun received an in-depth briefing on the site’s role as a center of moderate religious thought and inter-civilizational dialogue.
