President Tebboune Calls for Increased Mobilization of Resources for African Development Projects

Algiers, February 13, 2024- In his address delivered via video conference at the 41st Steering Committee Meeting of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union Development Agency, NEPAD, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune urged his African counterparts to mobilize more human, technical, and financial resources to implement pioneering continental projects outlined in the Agenda 2063 for Africa’s development.

“I seek your permission, on this occasion, to call for the necessity of mobilizing more human, technical, and financial resources to implement the pioneering continental projects outlined in the Agenda 2063 for Africa’s development,” stated President Tebboune.

President Tebboune also called for “strengthening efforts to achieve continental complementarity and integration, including accelerating the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement and supporting initiatives aimed at promoting development in Africa.”

In this regard, Tebboune placed particular emphasis on “development projects related to infrastructure and industrial transformation, due to their link to establishing security and achieving desired development.”

“Our participation in the proceedings of the 41st NEPAD session demonstrates my country’s commitment to achieving economic development goals and continental integration,” declared the President, emphasizing “the importance of working to enhance the efficiency level of African economic integration processes.”

Establishment of 3 Free Zones in 2024

Highlighting Algeria’s efforts, the President announced that “Algeria will, in 2024, God willing, establish free trade zones between itself and its brothers, starting with sister Mauritania, then the Sahel countries, Mali and Niger, in addition to Tunisia and Libya.”

He called for improving infrastructure by increasing partnerships between the public and private sectors, enhancing regional production and trade networks by strengthening productive capacities, continuing efforts to strengthen the role of the industrial sector, engaging in global value chains by stimulating the diversification of African industries, and accelerating the implementation of the Continental Free Trade Agreement.

In the same vein, the President affirmed that “Algeria attaches great importance to investments in the infrastructure and basic equipment sector, especially in vital areas such as energy, transportation, and communications.”

He reiterated Algeria’s commitment to five (05) major continentally significant projects in this field, namely the Trans-Saharan Highway, the road project between Tindouf and Zouerate in Mauritania, the Trans-Saharan fiber optic network, the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline, and the railway transportation project.

The President concluded by stressing the need for concerted efforts and enhanced cooperation among African nations to realize the continent’s development aspirations.
