President Tebboune Champions Local Media: Communication Minister Inaugurates New Radio Facilities in Béchar and Béni-Abbès

Algeria’s Head of State reaffirms commitment to strengthening grassroots journalism and modernizing local radio infrastructure, enhancing citizens’ right to information and fostering regional development.

Algiers, Algeria | June 13th, 2025 — The Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, reiterated on Friday that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune places strategic importance on local radio stations, emphasizing their crucial role in promoting development and fostering proximity between the state and its citizens.

Speaking during the official inauguration ceremony of the new headquarters of Béchar Local Radio and the broadcasting center of the Béni-Abbès provincial capital, Minister Meziane stated, “President Abdelmadjid Tebboune accords special attention to the modernization and development of local radios, such as Béchar and Béni-Abbès, the latter being a pioneering station with a rich history in the Algerian media landscape.”

The ceremony marked a significant milestone in Algeria’s media reform strategy, with the new Béchar Radio headquarters occupying a unique place as the first local radio station ever established in Algeria, dating back to April 20, 1991. The facility in Béni-Abbès will complement efforts to decentralize media services and make public information accessible to citizens across the national territory.

“This inauguration is not merely a symbolic act,” the Minister affirmed. “It forms part of a broader governmental policy aimed at improving the working conditions of journalists, producers, and technicians, while reinforcing the capacities of local media as tools of public service and development.”

Meziane stressed that local media represents a “strategic necessity” in the new Algeria, providing tailored and accessible information that is both reflective of and responsive to the needs of citizens. “These media are essential levers for local development,” he added, underscoring their critical role in the democratic process and social cohesion.

The Director General of National Radio, Adel Slakdji, highlighted that the initiative aligns with the national roadmap for media modernization, thanks also to strong support from the local authorities of Béchar and Béni-Abbès. “The opening of these modern facilities is part of our ongoing commitment to equipping our local radios with advanced tools and structures to meet the evolving needs of their audiences,” Slakdji stated.

During the visit, Minister Meziane, accompanied by local officials, toured the editorial and technical departments of Béchar Local Radio, where he was briefed on the station’s operations and its 12-hour daily programming. The minister expressed satisfaction with the professionalism and dynamism of the staff, reaffirming the state’s backing for the national media sector as a cornerstone of development and democracy.

To conclude his working visit, the Minister took part in a symbolic tree-planting ceremony in front of the new headquarters—an initiative reflecting the spirit of renewal and rootedness in the region.
