With a focus on domestic integration, Algeria takes firm steps toward developing a strategic automobile manufacturing base, inviting international brands while reinforcing homegrown innovation.

Algiers, Algeria– Friday, July 18, 2025 |  In a decisive reaffirmation of Algeria’s industrial ambitions, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared that the country is determined to establish a fully integrated and sustainable national automotive industry. Speaking during his routine televised encounter with national journalists, the Head of State emphasized that the goal is not mere vehicle assembly, but the development of a robust and sovereign sector capable of producing key components domestically and supporting Algerian innovation.

“We aspire to build a national automotive industry,” Tebboune stated, underlining that real development hinges on substantial integration rates rather than superficial production models. “What we want is not a prêt-à-porter solution, but a strategic, future-oriented investment in Algerian capabilities and infrastructures,” he asserted.

Drawing a parallel with the country’s defense manufacturing success, President Tebboune cited the military sector’s accomplishment in locally producing gearbox systems as a model of technical self-reliance. He also highlighted the achievement of a national startup that successfully fabricated electrical wiring harnesses—an essential component in modern vehicles—entirely within Algerian borders.

“These are signs that Algerian genius is not theoretical—it is practical, innovative, and scalable,” the president declared. He further revealed that the government has already granted the green light to several internationally renowned automotive brands, among them the Italian marque Fiat, which has officially committed to a national integration principle.

President Tebboune reassured Algerian citizens that while the demand for vehicles is legitimate and pressing, the State will not sacrifice strategic vision for short-term convenience. “Yes, we can import vehicles in the interim. But the car is a priority—not an absolute one,” he stressed. The emphasis, he insisted, must remain on building a long-term ecosystem that empowers Algerian technicians, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers.

The president’s remarks point to a shift in national policy away from dependency on imports and towards a diversified industrial base. Algeria’s emerging automotive vision not only seeks to create jobs and transfer technology but also to position the country as a future hub for automotive production across the region.

“We will no longer settle for being a market—we aim to become manufacturers,” the President concluded, signaling a new chapter in Algeria’s economic and industrial roadmap.
