Algiers, Algeria– Friday, July 18, 2025 | In a forthright televised interview with representatives of national media, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune addressed a series of pressing domestic and international issues, reaffirming key economic priorities, clarifying Algeria’s foreign policy posture, and offering reassurances to citizens about essential public services.

The president made it unequivocally clear that Algeria will not adopt austerity measures, despite global economic volatility. “There is no austerity in Algeria,” President Tebboune stated firmly, countering speculation about potential budget tightening.

Central to the discussion was the enduring challenge of the shadow economy, which the president labeled as a structural impediment to Algeria’s financial integrity. “The shadow economy must disappear,” he declared, emphasizing that its elimination must occur “without resorting to force or any liberty-depriving measures.” His remarks signal a strategic and possibly regulatory approach to formalizing economic activity while avoiding repressive tactics.

On the agricultural front, the president revealed that Algeria’s agricultural production is expected to reach nearly $38 billion in value this year, underscoring the sector’s pivotal role in national economic diversification and food security. He positioned agriculture as a cornerstone of Algeria’s post-hydrocarbon development strategy.

Regarding public utilities, the president gave categorical assurances: “No Algerian will be deprived of drinking water,” a statement intended to calm public concern during a period of climatic stress and regional water shortages.

Turning to foreign affairs, President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s traditional stance of non-alignment, affirming: “The blood of non-alignment runs through Algeria’s veins.” He pointed to the country’s balanced diplomatic engagements with major global powers as proof of this enduring principle. “Everyone wonders about the secret behind Algeria’s strong relations with the United States, Russia, and China,” he noted, highlighting the country’s ability to navigate multiple geopolitical axes while maintaining strategic autonomy.
