Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 29, 2025 |  President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria held in-depth bilateral talks this Tuesday with the President of the Lebanese Republic, Joseph Aoun, who arrived in Algiers earlier in the day on an official visit. The discussions took place at the Honour Lounge of Houari Boumédiène International Airport, marking the first high-level meeting of the visit, which underscores the enduring fraternal relations between Algeria and Lebanon.

Upon his arrival, President Aoun was accorded a ceremonial welcome befitting the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. The welcoming ceremony was marked by the playing of both national anthems, the inspection of military units from the Algerian People’s National Army, and a 21-gun salute, traditionally reserved for distinguished guests of the Republic. Senior Algerian state officials and government members were present to greet the Lebanese leader.

The Lebanese Presidency’s official X platform (formerly Twitter) shared a statement from President Aoun, in which he expressed profound appreciation for Algeria’s consistent and unwavering support. “I am delighted to visit Algeria, a brotherly nation that has always stood by Lebanon in its most trying times,” he declared upon landing.

President Aoun emphasized that “Algeria has never failed to support Lebanon, whether through its positions on the international stage or through direct assistance on the ground.”

The meeting between Presidents Tebboune and Aoun marks a pivotal moment in the strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two countries. It reflects Algeria’s enduring commitment to solidarity with Lebanon amid regional complexities and internal Lebanese challenges.

This official visit is expected to open further avenues for cooperation, particularly in political, economic, and cultural spheres. High-level consultations and potential agreements are anticipated as both nations reaffirm their mutual commitment to Arab unity and collective advancement.

Further engagements are scheduled during President Aoun’s stay, including meetings with key government officials and visits to prominent Algerian institutions.

Algeria and Lebanon: A Historic and Enduring Partnership

Algeria and Lebanon continue to nurture a longstanding relationship built on shared history, mutual solidarity, and enduring diplomatic ties. Deeply rooted in mutual respect and cooperation, the two countries remain committed to strengthening their strategic partnership and injecting renewed momentum into bilateral collaboration across key sectors.

Reviving Strategic Ties through a Landmark Visit

In this spirit of cooperation, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun began an official visit to Algeria on Tuesday, aiming to deepen ties and explore new avenues for collaboration. His visit comes at a time when both countries are seeking to broaden their partnership and coordinate on pressing regional and international issues.

Algeria’s Constant Support for Lebanon

Over the years, Algeria has stood firmly beside Lebanon, particularly through the country’s difficult periods. From supporting Lebanon’s political stability to backing its economic recovery and promoting peace, Algeria has consistently demonstrated its solidarity.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has repeatedly called for stronger Arab solidarity with Lebanon, emphasizing at the 2024 Baghdad Arab Summit that Lebanon’s unity and sovereignty are essential for the security of the Middle East. In his congratulatory message to President Aoun upon his election earlier this year, Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to promoting bilateral relations.

A Relationship Backed by Tangible Action

In January, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast support during an official visit to Lebanon, underscoring Algeria’s determination to assist in rebuilding Lebanon’s institutions and economy. This position was met with appreciation by Lebanese authorities, especially in light of Algeria’s consistent calls to revitalize bilateral cooperation.

Lebanon, for its part, has expressed a strong desire to reinvigorate its ties with Algeria. President Aoun has lauded President Tebboune’s unwavering support at the UN Security Council, particularly during last year’s Israeli aggression against Lebanon. Algeria’s decision in August 2024 to urgently supply Lebanon with fuel for its power stations was met with wide praise from Lebanese political and civil society circles.

A Track Record of Solidarity and Cooperation

Algeria’s solidarity has long been visible. Following the devastating Beirut port explosion in 2020, Algeria dispatched over 200 tonnes of humanitarian aid and deployed medical and disaster management teams. During the COVID-19 crisis, Algeria again stepped in with additional assistance to support the Lebanese people.

In a further show of political will, President Tebboune ordered the resumption of direct flights between Algiers and Beirut in 2023—an economic and symbolic move that underscored the strength of bilateral relations.

Parliamentary Diplomacy and Economic Vision

Since 2022, the Algeria-Lebanon Parliamentary Friendship Group has actively worked to bolster inter-parliamentary relations. Its mission includes expanding cooperation across various sectors, enhancing trade exchanges, and laying the groundwork for a strategic partnership through the reactivation of the Algerian-Lebanese Business Council.

The current momentum signals a shared ambition to transform historical friendship into a dynamic partnership fit for today’s global challenges—anchored in solidarity, common values, and a shared vision for regional peace and prosperity.
