𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓕𝓮𝓫𝓻𝓾𝓪𝓻𝔂 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 – In a defining moment for Algeria’s industrial and infrastructural landscape, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune officially inaugurated the Gara Djebilet–Tindouf–Béchar Mining Railway this Sunday in the wilaya of Béchar, marking a historic milestone in the nation’s strategic development agenda. The ceremony coincided with the arrival of the first passenger train from Tindouf, symbolizing the dual role of the line in transporting both mineral resources and citizens.
President Tebboune extended his appreciation to the workers of the National Railway Transport Company (SNTF) and all contributors to this strategic project. Engaging directly with passengers aboard the inaugural train, the Head of State underscored the line’s critical importance for regional connectivity, national mining output, and sustainable economic development. He also presided over the reception of the first ore shipments from the Gara Djebilet iron mine destined for Oran, highlighting the operational readiness and strategic significance of the railway.
Accompanied by General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army, President Tebboune was formally received by civil and military authorities of Béchar. Citizens lined the main thoroughfares leading to Béchar Station, providing an unprecedented display of popular support and enthusiasm for the project, reflecting its national resonance.
A documentary produced by Algerian Television under the supervision of the General Directorate of Communication at the Presidency provided the President with an in-depth overview of the line’s technical, logistical, and economic dimensions. The presentation detailed the transformative impact of the railway on Algeria’s mining and transport infrastructure, emphasizing the project’s role in bolstering national industrial capabilities.
Project Overview and Key Indicators
The Gara Djebilet–Tindouf–Béchar Mining Railway spans 950 km, designed to operate at speeds of 160 km/h for passenger trains and 80 km/h for freight and mineral transport. Daily operational capacity is projected at 24 trains for mineral resources, two for passengers, and two for general freight.

Engineering Feats and Infrastructure
The railway’s construction entailed 15.24 million m³ of embankment, 54.28 million m³ of excavation, and 2.58 million m³ of layered structures. The total track length laid reaches 1,026.22 km, supported by 1.6 million precast concrete sleepers.
The line incorporates 45 major railway bridges (20.04 km total), including the 4.11 km Daoura River Bridge, and 50 road overpasses and underpasses. Seven stations span the route: Abadla, Hamaguir, Tabelbala, Hassi Khebi, Oum El Assel, Tindouf, and Gara Djebilet.
The workforce deployed comprised 11,457 skilled laborers, supported by 38 prefabrication workshops and multiple sleeper production units, including 3,000 units/day in Hassi Khebi and 1,000 units/day in Hassi Mounir, supplemented by facilities in Rouiba, Beni Saf, Hassi Bahbah, Aïn Oussara, and Naâma. The railway also required the development of 471 quarries and sand pits (423 quarries, 48 sand pits).
This railway is not merely an infrastructural achievement; it is a cornerstone of Algeria’s industrial sovereignty.
