President Tebboune Reaffirms Algeria’s Support for Libyan Elections as Path to Stability

Algiers, Algeria | October 16th, 2024 —  In a significant reaffirmation of Algeria’s commitment to regional stability, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized, on Wednesday, that the resolution of the ongoing crisis in Libya can only be achieved through elections. This assertion was made during a joint press conference with Younes El Menfi, Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, following their discussions at the Algerian presidential office.

During their “fraternal consultations,” President Tebboune underscored the importance of addressing the current situation in Libya and enhancing bilateral relations between the two nations. He expressed, “We reached consensus on all points, and there are no clouds of discord between us and our Libyan brothers.” This statement reflects a positive sentiment, highlighting the strong ties and mutual understanding that exist amid Libya’s ongoing political turmoil.

Tebboune reiterated his aspiration for a stable Libya, asserting that elections represent the sole viable solution to the country’s challenges. He noted the alignment of perspectives between the two leaders, affirming that “the final decision belongs to the Libyan people,” thereby stressing the significance of respecting the choices made by Libyans in shaping their future.

In addition to political stability, President Tebboune expressed hopes for increased exchanges and visits between Algeria and Libya. He revealed plans for an upcoming trilateral meeting involving Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, stating, “We will soon meet in Libya for trilateral consultations, and we await the date to be set by His Excellency President Younes El Menfi.”
