President Tebboune Reaffirms Strength, Commitment of Algerian Armed Forces

Algiers- Algeria, May 10, 2024 – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Algerian Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense, stressed the vital role of a strong military and a prosperous economy in safeguarding national sovereignty during his visit to the Ministry of National Defense headquarters on Wednesday. Addressing Commanders of the Armed Forces, the six Military Regions, major units, and military schools via videoconference, President Tebboune highlighted the significance of the People’s National Army (PNA) in upholding Algeria’s sovereignty.

“Preserving national sovereignty depends on a powerful and robust military and a thriving economy,” President Tebboune affirmed, noting that the PNA is already formidable and will continue to strengthen to defend Algeria’s sovereignty. He emphasized the importance of having a strong and respected military as a deterrent against external threats, clarifying that the military’s development is aimed at protecting Algeria’s territory and ensuring the future of the current generation, rather than aggression against other nations.

“Since independence, Algeria has always adhered to international legitimacy and has never attacked any country,” President Tebboune stated. He praised Algeria’s economic progress, citing tangible achievements and anticipating significant advancements by 2027, particularly with the completion of major projects.

President Tebboune expressed gratitude to all PNA personnel, highlighting the National Memory Day as a symbol of Algerian pride in its history. He recalled the sacrifices made by Algerians against the atrocities of French colonialism and responded to critics by affirming that a nation without honorable and resilient ancestors faces an uncertain future.

“The Algerian people are resilient and reject occupation, fighting for their freedom,” President Tebboune emphasized. He reminded detractors of Algeria’s struggle for freedom by recalling the brutalities of May 8, 1945, stating that those who disregard the memory of martyrs and the dignity of Algeria lack both a history and a future.

Regarding external debt, President Tebboune reiterated his opposition to it, as it undermines the sovereign decision-making of the state, describing it as a disgrace and betrayal to the martyrs. He reaffirmed Algeria’s support for just causes, particularly the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues, condemning attempts to deny the existence of the Palestinian people and advocating for a Palestinian state.

On the Sahrawi question, President Tebboune stressed the importance of allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination through a referendum. He highlighted the difficulties faced by the Sahrawi people and Algeria’s unwavering support for them, urging the UN to expedite the work of the Decolonization Commission.

In conclusion, President Tebboune praised the efforts of all PNA units and commended General of the Army, Chief of Staff of the PNA, Saïd Chanegriha, for ensuring the optimal operational readiness of the Algerian Armed Forces.
