Sahrawi Envoy Hails Algeria’s Steadfast Support for the Western Sahara Cause, While Vatican Ambassador Bids Farewell After Completing His Mission in Algiers

Algiers, Algeria | May 19th, 2025 — In two high-level diplomatic engagements held on Monday, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the outgoing ambassadors of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) and the Vatican, in farewell audiences marking the end of their respective missions in Algeria. The meetings reflected Algeria’s consistent foreign policy ethos grounded in justice, solidarity, and principled diplomacy.

During his farewell visit, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD), expressed profound gratitude for Algeria’s unshakable and historic stance in support of the just cause of the Sahrawi people. Speaking following his audience with President Tebboune, the Sahrawi diplomat praised Algeria’s enduring commitment to the principles of self-determination and anti-colonial resistance.

“Algeria has remained a steadfast bastion of justice, defending the Sahrawi cause with unwavering solidarity across decades,” stated Taleb Omar. “The Sahrawi people have never felt abandoned during their long and dignified struggle for freedom. Algeria, the land of a million and a half martyrs, has honored its moral duty and brotherly ties, standing shoulder to shoulder with us in the face of occupation and injustice.”

Reflecting on the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the Polisario Front and the beginning of armed resistance, Taleb Omar emphasized Algeria’s principled foreign policy, which has remained firm despite external conspiracies and political pressures. He underscored that the Sahrawi resistance has, over time, debunked the Moroccan regime’s attempts to legitimize its occupation of Western Sahara and to remove it from the international decolonization agenda.

“Our enduring resistance has proven the falsity and futility of the Moroccan regime’s claims,” he noted. “More importantly, it has engraved in the collective memory of our successive generations the values of resilience, loyalty to Algeria, and the shared aspiration to defeat occupation and colonialism once and for all.”

The farewell audience was held in the presence of Boualem Boualem, Director of the Presidential Cabinet, and Amar Abba, Diplomatic Advisor to the President.

Later the same day, President Tebboune also received the Apostolic Nuncio of the Vatican, Kurian Mathew Vayalunkal, who paid his farewell visit at the end of his diplomatic mission in Algeria. The encounter, held in the same solemn setting at the Presidency, also witnessed the participation of Boualem and Abba.

Though brief, the Vatican envoy’s farewell audience symbolized the enduring cordiality and mutual respect between Algeria and the Holy See, marking another chapter of productive engagement in interfaith dialogue, humanitarian cooperation, and peace diplomacy.

These twin farewell audiences underscored Algeria’s consistent global engagement rooted in moral clarity, diplomatic respect, and an unwavering commitment to justice — whether in supporting liberation movements or upholding international religious diplomacy.
