President Tebboune Unveils Algeria’s Strategic Plan to Store Nine Million Tonnes of Cereals

Algiers, Algeria– Friday, July 18, 2025 | In a statement during his regular interview with representatives of the national media, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune outlined a bold and ambitious strategy aimed at bolstering Algeria’s food security through a massive expansion of its cereal storage capabilities.

Addressing the critical importance of grain reserves for the country’s food sovereignty, President Tebboune announced that Algeria will store up to 9 million tonnes of cereals, with an emphasis on durum wheat, a staple of national consumption. “This is a national project of utmost priority,” he stated, underlining the urgency of ensuring strategic reserves in an increasingly unpredictable global climate context.

While expressing cautious optimism about the forthcoming agricultural season, President Tebboune warned of an impending drop in rainfall levels, not only in Algeria but also across the broader Maghreb and sub-Saharan regions. “Rainfall levels are expected to decline sharply in many African countries. This will have consequences,” he cautioned, adding that Algeria must brace itself by reinforcing its agricultural resilience.

The President confirmed that the objective of achieving a storage capacity of nine million tonnes is not aspirational but within reach. “It will be achieved,” he affirmed, signaling strong political will and institutional commitment to the project.
