President Tebboune Welcomes Yasmina Khadra and Honors Him as a “Loyal Son of Algeria”

The Head of State Commends Mohamed Moulessehoul for His Literary Contributions and International Recognition, Reaffirming Algeria’s Commitment to Culture

Algiers, Algeria | May 19th, 2025 — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received the internationally acclaimed Algerian novelist Mohamed Moulessehoul, better known by his pen name Yasmina Khadra, on Monday in Algiers. During the warm and symbolic encounter, Khadra presented the Head of State with a copy of his 2022 novel Les Vertueux or  ”The Virtuous”.

A video released by the Presidency on its official Facebook page captured the moment the celebrated author offered his work to the President, who expressed appreciation for Khadra’s prolific literary career and his ongoing contribution to Algeria’s cultural image on the world stage.

Les Vertueux tells the story of a young Algerian man who takes up arms in 1914 to fight within the ranks of the colonial army. The decision is made under the weight of a social contract: the young soldier enlists on behalf of a local “qaid”, who promises in return to care for the conscript’s family during the harrowing years of the First World War. The novel intricately explores themes of sacrifice, identity, and dignity against the backdrop of a colonial battlefield.

This high-profile reception follows President Tebboune’s personal message of congratulations to Khadra on February 19, in recognition of his victory at the Pepe Carvalho Prize for Crime Fiction, a Spanish literary award. The accolade was conferred upon Khadra during the Barcelona Negra (BCNegra) crime fiction festival on February 13, in acknowledgment of his outstanding body of work in the noir and literary thriller genres.

In a televised interview with Algerian state media, Khadra expressed profound gratitude for the President’s words:

“I thank the President of the Republic and commend his deep interest in culture and intellectuals. He is the first Head of State to personally congratulate me, and that made me both proud and immensely happy,” he said.

President Tebboune had hailed Yasmina Khadra as a “devoted son of Algeria”, stressing that his recognition by “a friendly country”, Spain, underscores the author’s exceptional creative talent and the high regard he enjoys on the international literary stage.
