Algiers, Algeria– Sunday, July 20, 2025 | Algiers witnessed a momentous reaffirmation of pan-African solidarity and strategic bilateral cooperation on Saturday, as Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa arrived in Algeria for a two-day official visit at the invitation of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The visit culminated in a joint press conference marked by the signing of several key agreements and memoranda of understanding aimed at bolstering economic, educational, and diplomatic collaboration.

In his address, President Mnangagwa paid high tribute to Algeria’s historic role in supporting liberation movements across the African continent, describing the North African country as “a cornerstone of our collective freedom.” He declared: “Algeria has played a pivotal role in the liberation of Africa. In Zimbabwe and throughout Southern Africa, we fully recognize that your country significantly contributed to the independence and democracy we cherish today.”

He went further, affirming: “We thank the great Algerian people for this support. This visit rekindles our deep-rooted relations, which are built on solidarity and the relentless fight against colonialism and imperialism.”

The Zimbabwean head of state underscored that these ties transcend protocol and are anchored in values, struggles, and aspirations shared across generations. In a striking show of unity, he reiterated Zimbabwe’s firm stance in support of the Sahrawi people’s legitimate right to self-determination, adding: “We stand unwavering with the Sahrawi people in their just struggle. We also support calls for dialogue to end the conflict in Palestine and urge the world to shoulder its moral responsibilities in response to the suffering of the people of Gaza.”

President Mnangagwa lauded recent humanitarian and developmental gestures by Algeria, particularly highlighting the construction of a school in Zimbabwe and the shipment of 15,000 tonnes of fertilizer to mitigate the devastating impact of the El Niño-induced drought in 2024. “These actions,” he said, “have earned Algeria immense respect and gratitude from our people. Algeria is not only a reliable partner; it is a true friend of Zimbabwe.”

Turning his focus to the future, Mnangagwa emphasized the necessity of strengthening south-south cooperation in the face of shifting global dynamics. “Amid rapidly evolving geopolitical tensions, shifting trade patterns, and accelerating technological change, Zimbabwe must build robust partnerships with countries that share our values and development vision,” he stressed.

He concluded by affirming the strategic significance of the visit, which he described as an opportunity for both nations “to reaffirm their common commitment to restructuring the global order, ending arms proliferation, resolving regional conflicts, and combating terrorism in all its forms.”

This visit represents not merely a ceremonial renewal of ties, but a strategic declaration of intent. Under the stewardship of President Tebboune, Algeria continues to extend its diplomatic influence across the African continent, rooted in historical legitimacy and a clear commitment to global equity.
