President Tebboune's Call for Comprehensive Legal Reforms: "Finalizing Institutional Laws is Our Priority"

Algiers, Algeria | October 6th, 2024 — During a recent press engagement, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune reaffirmed his commitment to a comprehensive reform agenda, emphasizing the urgent need to finalize the revision of laws governing state institutions before embarking on further initiatives. “Completing the revision of laws concerning the institutions of the state is a priority that must be achieved before we can proceed with other actions,” Tebboune stated, adding that this is essential for laying the foundation for a modern state.

Addressing the national press, the President underscored that the upcoming local elections, which are crucial to Algeria’s democratic fabric, will not be held until key legal reforms are enacted. He pointed specifically to the need for the revision of the Wilaya and Commune Codes, as well as the law governing political parties. Tebboune stressed the importance of inclusivity in this process, declaring, “These laws must be developed in consultation with the political parties; they cannot be drafted behind closed doors and then imposed on them.”
The President also highlighted that the legal reforms directly affecting Algerian citizens will be approached with the same seriousness and transparency. He stated, “We will conclude these revisions through an honest and serious dialogue, which has already begun with political parties and civil society to gather all serious proposals on these reforms and codes.” This ongoing dialogue, according to Tebboune, is critical to ensuring that the reforms reflect the aspirations of both the political class and the general public.
