President Tebboune’s Strategic Vision in Action: Ministerial Delegation in Béchar Ahead of the Historic Launch of the Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Project

𝓐𝓵𝓰𝓲𝓮𝓻𝓼 – 𝓓𝓮𝓬𝓮𝓶𝓫𝓮𝓻 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓 – In implementation of the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, a high-level ministerial delegation is scheduled to visit the wilaya of Béchar today to assess the final preparations ahead of a major national event expected at the beginning of next year: the official launch of exploitation operations at the Gara Djebilet iron ore mine in Tindouf. This milestone marks the first time since Algeria’s independence that the country will enter the effective exploitation phase of one of the world’s largest iron ore reserves, in what is widely described as a historic and economically decisive moment.
The ministerial visit comes in direct response to the President’s recent statements during his visit to Constantine, where he confirmed that he would personally preside over the historic ceremony marking the arrival of the first shipment of iron ore extracted from Gara Djebilet to Béchar via the dedicated mining railway linking Tindouf to Béchar. The event is expected to symbolize Algeria’s transition from project planning to concrete industrial output in one of its most strategic mining ventures.
Located in the far southwest of the country, the Gara Djebilet mine stands as a cornerstone of Algeria’s long-term economic diversification strategy. With estimated reserves of approximately 3.5 billion tons of iron ore, the site ranks among the largest globally and represents a decisive asset in reducing Algeria’s structural dependence on hydrocarbons. Its exploitation is designed to anchor a new industrial dynamic based on mining, metallurgy, and heavy industry.
Central to the success of the project is the Béchar–Tindouf–Gara Djebilet mining railway line, extending over nearly 950 kilometers. This infrastructure constitutes the logistical backbone of the project, ensuring the transport of iron ore from the mining site to the national railway network and onward to industrial zones and ports. According to the Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Glaoui, construction works on this strategic line have reached a highly advanced stage and are expected to be fully completed within the coming days, paving the way for delivery before the end of 2025, in line with the established timetable.
Beyond its mining dimension, the Gara Djebilet project is expected to generate broad-based economic spillovers. Official data indicate that local exploitation of the ore is scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2026, with the first shipments reaching Oran by rail as early as the end of January, as previously announced by President Tebboune. During the infrastructure development phase alone, the project has already created thousands of direct and indirect jobs, particularly in the southwestern regions, contributing to regional development and social stability.
From an industrial perspective, the project is set to boost Algeria’s mineral exports, attract new investments, and lay the foundations for a robust heavy industry sector capable of integrating iron ore into national and international value chains. In this sense, Gara Djebilet is increasingly viewed as a future pillar of economic growth outside the hydrocarbons sector, which has long dominated the national economy.
The new railway infrastructure is also expected to play a broader developmental role. In addition to transporting iron ore, it is designed to support passenger and freight traffic across the southwest, with an operational plan envisaging no fewer than ten daily lines once fully launched. Built using modern technologies, this network will strengthen connectivity between southern wilayas and major production hubs in the north and west, offering a modern alternative to traditional transport routes.
At a strategic level, the Gara Djebilet–Tindouf–Béchar project reflects a clear shift in Algeria’s economic doctrine, placing economic sovereignty and the valorization of national resources at the heart of state policy. By prioritizing large-scale, long-term projects based on domestic natural wealth, the authorities aim to reposition Algeria as a significant player in regional and global mineral markets.
