Pretoria Stands Firm: South Africa Reaffirms its Unwavering Commitment to the Sahrawi Cause

Algiers, Algeria | In a resounding reaffirmation of its historic stance against colonialism and for the defense of oppressed peoples, South Africa has once again declared its steadfast support for the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.

This commitment was reiterated on Thursday in Cape Town during the African Water Summit, in a high-level meeting between the Sahrawi delegation and South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, Bebe Magudulela. The South African minister underlined her country’s determination not only to defend the just cause of Western Sahara, but also to forge concrete partnerships with the Sahrawi State in the water sector, while expanding bilateral cooperation into other strategic areas of mutual interest.

On the Sahrawi side, Adda Brahim Ahmim, Minister of Water and Environment, emphasized the urgency of deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the field of water management, a sector critical for both peoples. He stressed that this dialogue comes at a time of mounting hardship for the Sahrawi population, still suffering under Moroccan occupation and facing cuts in humanitarian aid destined for Sahrawi refugees.

Minister Ahmim underscored the government’s comprehensive strategy to increase water production, improve storage infrastructure, and guarantee equitable access for all citizens. Yet, he insisted, solidarity from partner nations is essential. He urged African countries to move beyond rhetoric and provide direct support to vulnerable nations, not only through financing but also by implementing joint strategies that ensure the continent’s access to safe and sustainable water resources.

Pretoria’s stance resonates far beyond bilateral cooperation. It is a reminder that South Africa, true to its legacy of resistance against apartheid and colonial domination, remains a frontline defender of the Sahrawi people’s right to sovereignty. In doing so, Pretoria exposes the glaring contradictions of those who preach democracy while tolerating colonial subjugation.
