Prime Minister: Zinc and Lead as New Engines of Growth

ALGIERS, March 17th, 2026 — During the launch of development works for access to the zinc and lead deposit in Amizour and Tala Hamza, the Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb emphasized that the project “will constitute a qualitative added value to the resources that Algeria will place on the international market.” He noted that it will also enable “a stronger positioning of the national economy.”
The Prime Minister stressed the strategic importance of these mineral resources, which have become “a major economic lever in a context of intensified competition among countries possessing natural wealth.” He placed the project within a broader dynamic aimed at revitalizing the mining sector.
“After the launch yesterday of the Gara Djebilet project, today we are launching that of Béjaïa, and tomorrow the phosphate project, while other initiatives will follow,” he declared. He further affirmed that “Algeria is moving steadily toward freeing itself from dependence on hydrocarbons, in line with the strategic objective set by the President of the Republic.”
The Prime Minister also praised the commitment of the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who had pledged that the project would be launched before the end of March.
Prior to the ceremony, the Prime Minister attended detailed technical presentations delivered by representatives of the concerned sectors, addressing the various components of the project as well as the accompanying infrastructure.
A Structuring Project for the National Economy
It is worth recalling that Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb undertook a visit on Tuesday to the wilaya of Béjaïa on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in order to supervise the launch of this strategic project. During a Council of Ministers meeting held last January, the President had stressed the necessity of initiating this major project by March 2026.
Through the exploitation of this deposit, Algeria aims to strengthen sustainable growth beyond hydrocarbons by diversifying its exports while ensuring the supply of the national market with zinc and lead—two essential raw materials for numerous industries.
Annual production is expected to reach 170,000 tonnes of zinc and 30,000 tonnes of lead.
