Resignation of the Mayor of Sidi M’hamed from the FLN: A Detailed Explanation of the Motivations Behind His Departure

Algiers – November 2025 – The President of the Municipal People’s Assembly (APC) of Sidi M’hamed in Algiers, the young and highly competent Lotfi Sellami, has formally submitted his resignation from the National Liberation Front (FLN), marking his official withdrawal from the party’s membership.
In his resignation letter, the Mayor of Sidi M’hamed, Lotfi Sellami, wrote:
“It is with deep regret that I submit to you my resignation from the ranks of the National Liberation Front. Accordingly, I request that my name be removed from the membership list of the Sidi M’hamed section, Hussein Dey district, effective the date of this resignation.”
Sellami, known for his credentials and youth leadership, affirmed that his decision followed careful reflection and a difficult internal struggle, stemming from his experience as the youngest elected municipal council president in Algeria and as a young party militant. He explained that both he and his colleagues endured significant difficulties during the period when the municipal council’s activities were suspended, while the party failed to provide support or rally behind its local elected representatives—an issue he noted had become recurrent in several instances.
He further highlighted what he described as the party leadership’s refusal to endorse FLN militants and elected members of Sidi M’hamed before local and central administrations, even after local party members had reached solutions and resolved disputes that could have led to lifting the suspension at the time. He stressed that they had fully committed themselves before supervisory authorities to serving the public interest. Sellami described these actions as humiliating and unprecedented in the history of the FLN leadership, ultimately undermining the party’s presence within the jurisdiction of Sidi M’hamed.
Sellami added that beyond this neglect, he was excluded from all positions of responsibility within the party’s internal structures, at all levels—from the basic section to, most recently, the National Committee for Youth Political Mobilization, held at the party’s headquarters and attended by young members from various regions.
The Mayor of Sidi M’hamed further noted the absence of direct communication channels and dialogue with the central leadership, as well as the lack of genuine political guarantees that would allow him to continue working under the party’s banner in accordance with the principles advocated by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the moralization of political life and the political empowerment of youth.
Sellami also clarified that his decision to sever ties with the party at this moment comes under ordinary conditions and results from a compelling personal conviction—one that pushes him to reassess his militant path and his political and electoral future with a renewed, ambitious, and results-driven vision.
He concluded by stating:
“As I leave today, I would like to express my appreciation for the efforts of my colleagues—both men and women—among the militants, cadres, and activists of the National Liberation Front, with whom I had the honor of working at various levels, positions, and during significant party milestones. I wish you all, and the youth of the FLN, continued excellence and prosperity.”
