Minister of Foreign Trade predicts a reversal of export dynamics within 10 years, with Algerian products poised to flood international markets and seize a major share of intra-African trade deals worth over $44 billion

Algiers, Algeria | May 17th, 2025 —  In a high-level meeting dedicated to export promotion, Kamel Rezig, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, issued a bold projection for the future of the national economy, declaring that Algerian non-hydrocarbon exports could surpass hydrocarbon exports within the next decade. He emphasized that Algerian products are set to “invade” global markets, reflecting a transformative shift in the country’s economic orientation.

Speaking candidly to economic operators, Rezig affirmed that the path to this new export paradigm is firmly rooted in the enlightened vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has prioritized the diversification of national exports beyond hydrocarbons. “Within 10 years, Algeria could witness a complete reversal, where non-oil exports exceed oil revenues,” the minister stated, signaling an ambitious but achievable target.

According to Rezig, over the past five years, the number of active exporters has fluctuated between 1,900 and 2,000 in goods, and around 400 in services—figures he believes are set to grow significantly with current structural reforms and export facilitation measures.

He described the meeting as an open and transparent dialogue platform between producers and public authorities, aimed at identifying and dismantling barriers to export development. The ultimate goal, he said, is to enhance the contribution of goods and services exports to Algeria’s GDP, fortifying the national economy and expanding its international footprint.

Looking ahead to the 4th Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) scheduled to take place in Algiers from September 4 to 10, Rezig expressed confidence in Algeria’s ability to secure a substantial share of the trade and investment agreements expected to result from the event. He revealed that the IATF is projected to generate commercial and investment deals exceeding $44 billion, and stressed that Algeria is aiming to capture at least 20% of this volume.

This strategic target reflects Algeria’s determination to leverage its geographical, industrial, and human potential in order to emerge as a key regional player in African trade, in line with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The IATF, which will bring together thousands of businesses, investors, and policymakers from across the continent, is seen as a pivotal opportunity for Algeria to showcase its products and solidify export partnerships.
