Rif Uprising Rekindles Historic Spirit of Resistance as Moroccan Occupation Faces Mounting Pressure

Algiers, Algeria | In a powerful display of defiance, pro-independence activists from across the occupied Rif region gathered today in the city of Al-Aroui, heartland of the Aït Bouyahyi tribe, adjacent to the occupied territories of Nador and Melilla, to commemorate the immortal anniversary of Raahad Al-Aroui — a landmark moment in the annals of Rif resistance.

This anniversary dates back to August 9, 1921, when Rifian fighters stormed a Spanish military garrison stationed in Al-Aroui, delivering one of the most painful blows to Spanish colonial forces. The event cemented the city’s symbolic status as a bastion of anti-colonial struggle and a rallying point for generations of Rif patriots.

Among the prominent figures present was Bachir Taibi, known as “Bachir Al-Aroui,” a former political detainee who spent four years in Moroccan prisons after defiantly raising the Algerian flag during Algeria’s national football triumph in 2021. In this latest act of resistance, Bashir held aloft a portrait of historical leader Yuba, reaffirming the unbreakable bond between free Rifian activists at home and those in exile.

The gathering drew participation from various Rif tribes, including the Qelaa, Aït Touzin, Aït Said, and Aït Bouyahyi, underscoring the broad unity and resilience of the movement. Activists emphasized that the Rif’s popular uprising continues to gain strength both within the occupied territory and across global capitals, steadily tightening the noose on Moroccan occupation and amplifying demands for the full and legitimate independence of the People’s Republic of the Rif.

With each passing commemoration, the Rif resistance revives its historical legacy, fortifying the will of its people to endure, mobilize, and confront the occupation with unwavering determination.
