Algiers, Algeria | August 5th, 2024 — In an exclusive interview with Sabq Press, Abdelkader Taleb Omar, the Saharawi Ambassador to Algeria, launched a robust critique of the French government’s recent decision to recognize Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan for Western Sahara. Taleb Omar denounced this move as a blatant violation of international law and a threat to regional stability, asserting that France’s actions undermine established legal standards and international consensus.
Taleb Omar, highlighting France’s role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, accused the French government of grossly neglecting its international legal obligations. He emphasized that Western Sahara’s status, as a case of decolonization, is unequivocally enshrined in international law and formally recognized by the United Nations. This position, according to Taleb Omar, represents a dangerous departure from the principles of international justice and the right to self-determination.
The Saharawi diplomat further criticized France for alignment with colonial interests, accusing the French government of exacerbating regional tensions, obstructing peace initiatives, and infringing upon human rights. He characterized the French stance as a continuation of its historically supportive position towards Moroccan occupation, underscoring that France’s actions have increasingly jeopardized the prospects for a just resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.
In contrast, Taleb Omar commended Algeria for its unwavering support of the Saharawi cause. He expressed profound confidence in Algeria’s role as a stalwart defender of international law, decolonization principles, and the quest for democracy and peace. Taleb Omar reaffirmed Algeria’s crucial position in advocating for the rights and justice of the people of Western Sahara, portraying it as an essential ally in the struggle for Saharawi self-determination.
