Sahrawi Mass Protests Defy Occupation and Reject Attempts to Undermine International Legitimacy

Algiers – October 2025 –  In a sweeping display of unity and defiance, thousands of Sahrawi refugees took to the streets across the camps on Monday to demand a just and transparent UN-led resolution that guarantees their inalienable right to freedom, self-determination, and independence. The demonstrations—described by the Sahrawi News Agency (SPS) as “massive and resolute”—echoed a firm rejection of all maneuvers aimed at circumventing international legality or imposing unilateral solutions to the decades-long conflict in Western Sahara.

The demonstrators, carrying Sahrawi national flags and chanting slogans of resistance, reaffirmed their unwavering adherence to the principles enshrined in UN resolutions and the international doctrine of decolonization. Their voices resounded across the refugee camps, denouncing what they called “systematic attempts to bury the Sahrawi cause under political opportunism and foreign pressure.”

This surge of popular mobilization comes in the wake of the Polisario Front’s submission of a comprehensive proposal to the UN Secretary-General, seeking to revive the political process on a clear and lawful basis anchored in international legitimacy. The proposal was followed by the Front’s official objection to the new U.S. draft resolution, which the Sahrawi leadership condemned as an attempt to entrench Moroccan occupation and divert the core of the conflict away from its essence—self-determination.

The UN Security Council is expected to discuss the Western Sahara file on October 30, amid growing reports of external pressure to endorse the American proposal, which many view as biased toward Morocco’s expansionist narrative. For the Sahrawi people, however, the message remains unequivocal: no imposed solution can override their collective will or extinguish their struggle for freedom.

In interviews with the Sahrawi News Agency, several participants stressed that the demonstrations were a natural and necessary response to renewed international attempts to repackage outdated proposals long rejected by the Sahrawi nation. “Our protests are not mere expressions of anger,” said one participant. “They are a clear message to the world that the Sahrawi people will never accept any resolution that denies their legitimate right to self-determination and independence.”

The mass gatherings drew participants from all segments of Sahrawi society—men, women, youth, and elders—reflecting a profound sense of national unity and collective resolve. The demonstrators’ chants, banners, and coordinated actions underscored a single truth: the Sahrawi people, in every place they reside, remain steadfast defenders of international law and the universal principles of justice and freedom.

This renewed wave of civil resistance sends an unmistakable signal to the global community that the Sahrawi struggle is far from over. It reaffirms that any political arrangement excluding the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination is doomed to fail.

The Sahrawi voice, rising once more in the heart of the desert, stands as a moral indictment of the ongoing occupation and a resounding call to the international community: justice delayed is freedom denied.
