Sahrawi People Reaffirm Unyielding Commitment to Self-Determination at Boumerdes Summer University

Algiers, Algeria | The curtain has fallen on the 15th edition of the Summer University of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), held in the Algerian province of Boumerdes, where Sahrawi leaders, intellectuals, and youth cadres sent a resolute message to the world: the Sahrawi people will never relinquish their inalienable right to self-determination.

Over the course of a week, the event — themed “Struggle and Sacrifice to Secure Independence and Freedom” — became a forum for rigorous debate, moving testimonies, and the forging of a unified strategy for the Sahrawi cause. The closing session, presided over by Mrabih Mami Dai, President of the Summer University and senior figure in the Polisario Front, underscored that the Sahrawi struggle remains both a political and armed resistance against what he described as the Moroccan occupation’s attempts to defy international law and impose a fait accompli in Western Sahara.

Algeria’s Enduring Role

Participants paid a solemn tribute to Algeria and its President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, recognizing nearly five decades of unwavering diplomatic, humanitarian, and political support for the Sahrawi cause. Through hosting refugees in Tindouf, training Sahrawi cadres, and maintaining a firm diplomatic stance before international bodies, Algeria has — in the words of attendees — demonstrated “a historic constancy” in upholding the principles of decolonization and solidarity.

Speeches from senior Algerian officials reaffirmed this commitment. Salah Goudjil, President of the Council of the Nation, emphasized that Algeria’s position is rooted in its anti-colonial heritage and its conviction that Africa must be freed from exploitation. Brahim Boughali, President of the National People’s Assembly (APN), described the Sahrawi cause as “sacred” and pledged continued advocacy in all international forums.

Resistance in the Face of Occupation

In his address, Mrabih Mami Dai reminded attendees that since the Polisario Front’s resumption of armed struggle in November 2020 — following Morocco’s breach of the ceasefire at Guerguerat — the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army has carried out sustained operations with tangible military, economic, and psychological effects on Moroccan forces.

He called upon the United Nations to enforce its own resolutions, end the last case of colonialism in Africa, protect civilians under occupation, and empower MINURSO to hold the long-promised referendum in line with the 1991 UN–African Union Settlement Plan. The European Union, he warned, must refrain from signing agreements with Morocco involving Western Sahara’s land, waters, or airspace, as doing so constitutes a violation of international law.

A Clear Warning

Mrabih was unequivocal in his regional assessment: “The threat to peace in this region comes clearly from the occupying Morocco, which pursues expansionist policies, floods the area with drugs, and welcomes the Zionist regime.” He declared that the liberation of Western Sahara is inevitable, and that solidarity among oppressed peoples is a force that will not be subdued.

Far from marking an end, the closing of the Summer University represents a renewed phase in the Sahrawi struggle. By strengthening the capabilities of young political cadres, the Polisario Front is cultivating a new generation of leaders committed to advancing their people’s legitimate rights through all lawful means — political, diplomatic, and, if necessary, armed.

With voices unified and strategies sharpened, Boumerdes has sent a clear and defiant message: the Sahrawi people’s march toward independence is irreversible, their cause anchored in international legitimacy, and their determination unshakable.
